Follow these steps.
Go to Tools > Profiles > Whatever Profile You Want > Personalise > Warning Tones "Off".
Holding down the # button will also put your phone in the Silent Mode profile which already has warning tones disabled.
Simple as that. All warning tones will be disabled including the Nokia sound that happens at startup every time you restart your phone.
Note: Keep in mind this solution will not work on North American N82 models because of some apparent privacy laws in the United States. There is a way around this but it involves changing your phones product code which is a risky procedure. If a user wants to silence their camera sound permanently couldn't they just change the sound file to a file with no sound.
I am not sure how easy it would be to replace the sound file of the "camera shutter sound" with a file of the same name that has no sound. It seems like this would carry less risk than messing with the firmware.
The replacement of the sound file might be possible now but it wasn't an option before. But replacing file at the system level of the phone requires a hack to do that. Overall, I preferred the straight english keypad. That was what prevented me from initially pre-ordering it from an online retailer, I had to physically make sure.
But Mike, seeing as how I have you here, would you happen to know anything about some sort of a firmware upgrade or 3rd party app that would give the symbian OS transitions. I remember seeing a post on intomobile a while back regarding smooth transitions.
I'm pretty sure the N78 & N96 will have this feature, however it's such a basic feature, I always thought all phones made after 2000 would have it.. wierd

@ Zak... As of right now there is no way to upgrade to Symbian S60 3rd Edition with Feature Pack 2. The N82 has feature Pack 1. There has been no mention that this will be possible. Transitions should really be already available in Feature pack 1 you are right.
@ PJ... It should work for most European and Asia Pacific product codes. My code is 0560975. I haven't been able to find where thats from but I assume it's European. I haven't been able to find a list with all the N82 black's product codes since the phone is still new. I'll be hunting one down for you guys.

bummer guys. looks like we're gonna have to come up with another solution for those product codes that don't silence the camera. i'm gonna start looking for other solutions. replacing the mp3 sound would be one idea i'm gonna look into. let me know if anyone comes up with a solution.

And maybe someone knows how can i turn off the red-light beam that helps the camera to focus ? I will sell my n82 for this annoying disfunction :( , when i take picture every people looks at me when that red flash light blinks.

You could replace the original shutter sounds.
Its located z:\system\sounds\digital\.
I replaced one of the CamMojaveCapture.wav with an empty wav file. Works on my n82 black.

you can also use a third party app (like ccam) to silence the camera... but it still gives out the red AF light.... is there any way to shut that down?? AF is very useful, but there are times when you dont want ppl staring at you for taking pics ;-)

The best way is to look under your battery. it's usually a 7 digit number. Search google for that number and see what you find. The n82 black is still pretty new so maybe some haven't listed these numbers yet.

someone above said that he would sell his n82 for this red light as it is an annoying "disfunction". first of all, it is called an autofocus assist beam and helps your camera to focus at low light. its is not a malfunction. haven't you ever used a digital camera?

AF assist red light is good in some situations, but also nice to switch off (so you can take pictures of people without distracting them in parties for instance).
Does anyone know of any hacks / patches that allow disabling the AF red light? Thanks!

From dotsis:
Disable camera sound
Requirement
Hack your phone (v30 N82 users, sorry)
Have SecMan install
Have X-plore install
Steps
1. Run SecMan, Options, Turn Plat. Security OFF
2. Run X-plore, press "0" and check on Show Hidden files, ROM drives, RAM drives, system files/folders
3. Find Z:\Private\10202be9\101F8809.txt
Press 1 to copy then paste to C:\Private\10202be9\
4. Select and Edit C:\Private\10202be9\101F8809.txt
5. In the last two row of 101F8809.txt, you will find
0x7 int 1 0 cap_rd=alwayspasscap_wr=alwaysfail
Change to
0x7 int 0 0 cap_rd=alwayspasscap_wr=alwaysfail
(Notice just the int 1 to int 0)
Save and exit X-plore
Restart your phone
