One of the features I really missed on my Nokia N82 is the ability to take close up videos. I love taking macro pictures, the details are great, and the output gets more interesting and appealing. The same results I would love to get on my videos. It will also be helpful on shooting a phone's screen (for example, when doing video demonstration of a mobile application), or any other task that would require me to record close-up details of certain objects.. This will totally scrap off the need for a separate device for taking macro videos.
Just a few months ago, I was browsing Everythingn82.com and stumbled into a post claiming that taking macro videos with a Nokia N82 is possible! Just open the camera, and HIT somewhere near the camera lens cover to enable it. What? I can't just "hit" my precious phone! Let alone the camera. Intrigued, worried but I still tried it, very carefully. Several times, but nothing happened. There were no satisfying user replies on the post that time, so I assumed the idea was just a joke of some sort.
Until last week, I read about it again, this time an article by Mr. X of FinestFones. Which pointed me to a thread on Symbian-Freak. Turns out the idea is correct, and a handful of users confirmed that it works. I was kinda skeptical to try it again but one of the users suggested a more convincing way to do it instead of hitting the camera. So I gave it another shot. And the result is awesome! It works indeed, I was very pleased. Here's a sample video I took in close-up mode with my N82:
DISCLAIMER: DO AT YOUR OWN RISK. I have not experienced any problems (yet) but that doesn't mean you won't either. The camera module is one of the many sensitive parts of your nokia device. Trying this may lead to unwanted results, as the steps involved abnormally regulate the sensors with applied force. It may also affect other electronic parts of your device, so please be warned.
As suggested by one of the SF users, here's how I did it.
1. Activate the camera, and make sure it is in video mode.
2. Have a good hold on the lower part of your phone (like the way you would hold a credit card).
3. Carefully slap the phone against the palm of your other hand. You don't need to apply too much force. With your right hand supporting the lower part, along with minimal force, just let the weight of the phone fall against your left hand with the camera facing your palm. This should now activate macro mode and ready for recording..
You can also opt to be on a much safer side (or at least, it *looks* safer) by doing the "slap" in a faster manner, then stop right before the phone hits your palm, creating a sudden deceleration. Be careful though as your phone might slip off your hand during the process.
Again, do at your own risk. I was pleased to know that it really is possible with the N82, as well as other nseries devices like the N95 and N73. The result is quite remarkable and inviting, but I do not recommend doing this frequently with your device. I would never do it again unless I really need it for something important. Here's what Mazor of SF has to say about this procedure:
Hmm, this sounds dangerous and I would recommend against doing this to your mobile phone unless you want it to prematurely fail. It sounds like hitting the back of your phone puts momentum force onto the moving lens, which is driven by a motor that control focus into its extreme point. While it may sound harmless, one is actually forcing the focus motor to rotate, which is bad, and will eventually wear out the motor.
I have tested this on the N93, and this does not work, as it seems there is 2 motors in the N93, one that controls focus and one that controls optical zoom. I suspect the linkage of this motors in the N93 is a screw drive approach which is why it would be affected as easily from external impacts on the optical unit.
I wish Nokia would grant this to our phone on next firmware updates. I doubt its presence on the just released firmware for the N82. Automatic focusing on videos would be awesome, but I would be very very contented even with initial focus only.
So, have you tried this trick already? What do you think? Any better suggestions? Or have you experienced any troubles caused by this workaround yet? I would like to hear your thoughts about it..

Macro / Close-up Video Recording With Your N82
N82 Theme: Blue Touch By Larson - With 5800 Touch Icons
A nice looking theme with the striking ovi-ish icons. Looks good and feels like I want to touch the screen of my N82 to open folders and applications. I bumped into this theme on our friend Ravindra's new blog, SymbianStories, so most of you guys may have already seen this before. But I just love the way it looks and I think the touch icons were complimented very well by the bluish gradient background. So I decided to post about it here for all our readers. Your N82 on a Nokia DT-29: Camera and Video Delight
Last Christmas, when my brother came from Manila, he had a Nokia DT-29 tied up with his S40 phone. If you have not heard about it yet, it's an accessory that comes with the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, which serves a simple yet a very useful purpose: a stand that lets the phone stand by itself mainly for watching videos. My brother had his hands with his friend's 5800 Tube, and borrowed the DT-29, just to tease me. He said at least I'd be able to experience "the accessory" if not the phone itself. Poor me T_T.
After using it, I really enjoyed this accessory. It's like taking out the N96's kickstand so that (almost) every mobile device can make use of it. It saves me from having to hold my N82 all through out the period of a full-length movie. It can also be adjusted to fit different viewing preferences. Here are some pictures:
You can choose to widen up the distance between the two handles or narrow them down to adjust the inclination of your device:
You can also use it as a "sort of" a tripod for taking self-timer pictures. As well as video footage of yourselves, great for video bloggers. They can just place it on a desk, set a desired angle, press record, and voila! You and your free hands on the video. You will also be able to get better quality as the phone will be much steadier than when held by your hands:

It would be great if Nokia would put the DT-29 as a standard in-box accessory on all upcoming N-series devices. Or as Devin stated on his blog:

Black N82 Housing Cover Replacement: Advice Needed
My N82 is the warm titanium version and I've been meaning to change its housing since the announcement of the Black N82. I was holding back about doing this due to a lot of reasons. First, Nokia care centers here do not offer this service. Video and pdf guides came out but I didn't want to take the risk of breaking my phone if I do it by myself. Second, I did not really need it as my casing was as good as new. And lastly, when I saw a black N82 in real life, I was not really impressed by the looks. It was not as sexy as I expected, which led me to the thought that the silver / titanium color looks better and unique.
But now, I think it's time to replace the entire housing cover. My phone looks really ugly already. It has a lot of scratches, all sorts from thin, lengthy and the most annoying, the deep cuts which are very visible as they revealed black marks. The lower part of the front face plate has its silver finish peeling off, just a little which looks rust at first glance. Not to mention the creaking sounds.
Btw, these results are not very surprising. For 9 months, I can't remember how many times I dropped this trusty device and how frequent it has encountered accidental bumps against rough walls.
A few weeks before, Mike asked for help about replacing his LCD screen cover and he was able to get a lot of great resources from our readers. Everyone has been so helpful so I thought I'd consult you guys as well before I finally plunge into this.
Any tips will be highly appreciated, the best buy, guidelines, warnings, and the like. Has anyone tried this before, or planning to replace theirs as well? I would love my phone to have a new look for Christmas, :)

Thoughts About the N82's Loudspeaker Music Quality
Using wired headphones, music experience with an N82 is one of the best among the Nseries line. But the loudspeakers are disappointing, especially if you have never updated your firmware. So I decided to share the tips I use to somehow improve the music quality from the stereo speakers. Just to make it a little more acceptable than the way it is.
There's a Stereo Widening feature available on the music player, which really enhances the sound quality. Proven and tested through headphones. But I found out that it is the other way around when using the stereo speakers wherein turning it off makes the loudspeaker's sound output a tad better. Voices are more audible and clear, and one can easily distinguish the beat of the song even at lower volumes.
Here's how to turn it off:
- Make sure you are on the Now Playing screen. (Options > Go to Now playing)
- Hit Options > Audio Settings
- Highlight and set Stereo Widening to off
You can also make use of walls and corners which I also find helpful to even improve the sound quality. Placing your N82 a few centimeters away and with the speakers facing a wall will make the volume a bit stronger and effectively spread out the sound. I am interested to know how many of you guys love (or hate?) listening music through your N82's loudspeaker. After getting 3 firmware updates already, I think its quality is not that bad anymore.

T9 Nav Updated: Bug Fixes and Better Performance
Download the new version and let them know if you have any comments or suggestions on the software.
Hmm, I wonder which one is really better between SkyQuikey and T9 Nav.
With this update, both almost deliver the same features and user experience. But T9 Nav is freeware for the win, unlike SkyQuikey ($21.55 from the N82 Blog Store).
T9 Nav is freeware? Not for long! Unfortunately, this free version of T9 Nav will only last until February 2, 2009 and is planned to be launched as a commercial application by the end of January (a "one time" fee of $19.99). The previous version(s) of T9 Nav were supposed to be expired by now.
Now the question is, which one is worth buying for? Is it T9 Nav or SkyQuikey?
Whichever is, I can't buy any of these two anyway lol. The price is too much and will ruin my budget. If you are in the same situation but still wants a faster way round your phone, try rearranging your menu icons and get yourself familiar with keypad shortcuts to quickly access all your applications (works like charm). As for the contacts and bookmarks, well, I can live with the usual way if it means some cash will stay inside my wallet :)

N82 Tips - A Quicker Way to Save Radio Stations and More for your Nokia N82
Another list of random and refresher tips for you guys. Hope this helps..
Faster way to save radio stations on any slot (1-50):
- Press and hold down a number on your keypad for 2 seconds. (e.g. press and hold 9 to save the current radio station on slot 9)
- Enter a station name and select Ok.
- To save stations on two-digit slots (10-50), quickly press the first digit followed by a "press and hold" on the second digit. (e.g. quick press on 2 then press and hold 3 to save the current station on slot 23)
Save images from web pages through the built-in browser:
- Make sure the image you want to save is visible on the screen
- Select Options > Tools > View images
- From the list, select the image you want to save.
- Then select Options > Save
Enlarge your messaging capacity:
- If you want to send a message longer than the allowable 160 characters of an SMS, then why not send an MMS? This way, you will have unlimited characters and in most cases, will cost the same as only two text messages. (Just make sure the recipient is not using an iPhone though, lol.) Source: my.nokia.com
Get rid of some mp3 files from the Music Player
- If you are annoyed of your funny and cute little mp3 ringtones and other readable audio formats being scanned by the music player, just set their system and hidden file attributes to true, just the same as hiding images and videos from displaying on the gallery.
- The good thing here is, as easy as hiding the parent folder of your ringtones, the music player won't scan the files inside it. So just..
1. put your ringtones on a single folder
2. update your profiles (assign ring tones)
3. set the folder's system and hidden attributes to true (click here to learn how)
4. refresh your music library

Theme Park Fun with Friends and My N82
Last Sunday, my friends and I enjoyed a sunny day at Enchanted Kingdom, a big amusement park here in the Philippines. There were lots of cool and crazy rides and it was really really fun. Armed with the N82, I took several pictures and thought of sharing some of them with you guys. Here goes..
Jeez, my all-time favorites: Flying Fiesta (Giant Swing Ride), Jungle Log Jam (Jungle-themed flume ride) and Anchors Away (Pirate Ship Ride).
And of course, the breath-taking, mind-blowing Space Shuttle (Vecoma Boomerang Roller Coaster). One hell of a ride! Awesome! 10/10! Haha! I was not able to shoot a video of it in action but, here's a crazy clip I found from youtube:
As always, my Nokia N82 did not let me down. Needless to say, it allowed me to do more than just taking a picture. We watched all taken images and videos on our way home, sent some thru Bluetooth, uploaded a few instantly to the web, and edited some (for a wallpaper) directly on the phone. It's more than just a regular digital camera. And it's such a joy that I didn't have the need to bring an extra gadget for picture taking.
When was your last getaway trip with family / friends and how was your experience with your trusty N82? Were you satisfied with its performance or did you regret not bringing your digicam?
P. S. lol, half my body got wet when we rode Rio Grande Rapids (River Rafting Ride). Fortunately, my phone lied secured on my friend's bag. Condor (Spinning Tower Ride) has not been in operation for years now, I'm sure that's another stunning experience i would love to try.

Random Tips and Tricks for Your N82
Hey guys, starting today, I'll be doing quick posts to share you some tips and tricks that I have learned (and will be learning). These random tips can be helpful for some, and a refresher for others.
Ok then, to start off, dude - you know that,
- a way to find out if the N82 you're buying from a store is really brand new is to check it's "life-time" (that is the total amount of time the device has been used to call). To do this, go to stand-by screen and dial *#92702689# - Same goes with other nokia phones I suppose. Source here...
- in Multimedia Menu, each tiles can be easily accessed by pressing numbers 1-7 on your keypad. I don't use this animated menu that much aside from tabbed browsing but if you're a certified MM user, this shortcut comes handy. Saves a couple of key presses when switching from one tile to another.
- on stand by screen, pressing and holding down the right soft key will activate voice command wherein you can easily change your current profile or start an application or a phone call. You can set voice commands for your profiles, call mailbox, bluetooth, camera and other installed applications on Tools > Utilities > Voice comm.
- you can always lock your keypad anytime and on any screen, even during a game or a phone call, by pressing the power button briefly, then selecting Lock Keypad. You can also select Lock Phone to password protect your device while not in use.
- you can record phone calls for later reference. During a phone call, hit Menu on your keypad, select Applications > Media > Recorder. Select Options > Record Sound Clip to record the current phone call.
- the code to get your N82's wlan mac address,*#62209526#, is the same as *#mac wlan# It's easier to remember. A cool tip from Jonathan's comment on the article.
- a faster way to set up an alarm is just start pressing a number while the clock application is open. This shortcut saves you 2 keypresses so that you don’t need to press “options” and “new quick alarm.” Tip from The Nokia Blog.
- Same as the clock alarm tip, on the calendar application, quickly add new Meeting entries by just pressing your number keypad. This works on Month, Week and Day Views. On To-do View, a "to-do" entry is prompted instead. You can also shift calendar views easily by pressing * on your keypad. Pressing # on the other hand brings you to the current date.

Has The Best Camera Phone Been Overthroned? Is The N82 Still The Best Camera Phone To Date??
Over at All About Symbian.com, a very interesting read is the Camera Gritty Nitty series wherein Steve tackled several aspects regarding camera phones. Do unprotected lens' scratches really affect the output quality of pictures taken? What are the pros and cons of Led / Dual-Led / Xenon flashes in camera phones? Is it true that a camera isn't better just because it has more megapixels? Is there really difference between branded and regular camera optics? Head over to the articles to find out...
On the fifth part of the series, Steve investigated which among today's camera phone beasts really is the best? With the following devices, he made several comparisons and gave points in terms of effectiveness/colouration and detail captured: (Nokia N82, Nokia N95, Nokia N93, Samsung G810, and Samsung i8510). Here are the final scores:
Hmmm.. It's sad that the N82 did not win. But it's hard to accept that even the N95 triumphed over our dear N82 which leaves it at third place! The N95 indeed is a great phone, proven and tested that both phones capture outdoor shots with a very slight difference in picture quality. But with regards to indoor and night shots, the N82's xenon flash easily leaves the N95 far behind. So I think, as far as camera is concerned, the N82 is still ahead.
Samsung did a great job with the colors of i8510's images:
..though looks artificial, it's really pleasing in the eye. I wish Nokia will grant this to us as well (as an additional setting/option) on future firmware updates. And pray to God (O_o), that they grant us that long awaited fix on the N82's too much image compression. We have large capacity cards now, and Nokia needs not to be too concerned about us having 3-5mb for every pictures we take. It's what we really wanted, there are settings available anyway, in case users want to reduce image file size.
A couple of concerns I'd like to mention about the comparisons made, wherein the N82 could have won, (or at least against the N95??)
I believe the N82 is still the best camera phone today. What do you think? It does great quality outdoor shots, perfect even for large print-outs, and its Xenon Flash is a very huge advantage, especially in a battle against dedicated digicams.. Samsung i8510 and the N95, both having typical led illumination, won't even stand a chance on night shots, rendering them almost useless at night.
Don't get me wrong, like any other posts by Steve, i really enjoyed that article. I think it really boils down to the user as to how he wants his camera phone to be. And this camera-nitty-gritty series.., sure another helpful guide for those in search of that camera phone they really wanted.. ^^
As for me, the n82 is the real winner! ;-) Thoughts and comments welcome!

Mobile Games on My N82 - What's on Yours?
I thought I'd share a few mobile games I love playing. There are a lot of mobile games available for our N82, but only few of them found a permanent spot on my phone. Here are some of them:
Lego Bionicle Defenders
There are several types of towers you can use: towers that slows enemy creeps, towers that amplifies damage, and towers that deals splash damage. You must as well take note that each type of towers has their own range limit. Also, during your progress, you will be able to meet and use Bionicles, that deal heavier damage, and each of them own special abilities.
Zones are also available, which can be used to block enemies to buy some time (or to prolong them under your towers' range), or to increase your towers' damage. It’s rather easy at first, but as the game goes on, creeps become tougher, and bigger in number. In addition, setting up a tower costs an amount of credits and they can only be placed on limited positions. So you need to deploy those towers in the most optimal way to ensure a strong defense against enemy creeps.
The game has a Survival Mode and it's really really fun! In this mode, the game will not end unless a creep reaches the Mask Of Life. Creeps gets stronger as the power goes up. Proper tower positioning and good placement of zones is a must here. You'll really need to think of the best tower and zone formation, and make use of them the most effective way. I hardly reached Power 20, creeps were really tough. I tried several strategies, but still no luck exceeding my brother's high score haha!! The game works perfectly in landscape mode by the way... Also, you can compete with other player's high scores by posting yours online:

Global Race Raging Thunder
The game again is simple, in a way that other gamers may not be really into it. Basic controls and game objective: your car auto-accelerates, control it left or right to avoid crashes and stops, bump into boost items to speed up your car, make sure you're number one, and that's it!
Well, what really makes it fun for me is the smooth and nice graphics (it utilizes the N82's 3d hardware accelerated chipset), which is truly a better gaming experience compared to other racing games. And I enjoy real excitement by playing with my friends thru the bluetooth multiplayer feature! Thumbs all the way up!
The game initially has a few tracks to play with. But, using the application itself, you can go online and download more from the developer's website.
And also, take pleasure on playing this game using the N82's tv-out feature. Sure a joy with real-life track design of race tracks on your wide television screen.

N-Gage’s Brain Challenge
A very entertaining and mind tickling game! I simply love puzzle games and Brain Challenge really did a great job here! Check out this review from All About Symbian.
I wonder what happens when you reach 100% brain capacity (game ends just that? Maybe..). I had over 60% before, but the saved data were accidentally deleted.. Never had the chance to play it again until yesterday. Now I have 43%. I must say, whenever I start playing this, I can't help it but play again and again, until my battery goes empty, lol.
Vampent’s VBagX
If you haven't heard about VBagX yet, it is a GameBoy emulator (GBA) for your symbian s60 phone. I was overwhelmed the first time I learned that we can play GameBoy games on our pc's, so you can imagine how joyful I was when I knew it's also possible with a mobile device. Yes it is! Your N82 is a GameBoy!
Download it from the developer's site. It's not free but there's a trial version.

Application Review: Resco Photo Viewer 5.00 - Say Goodbye to your N82's Built-in Gallery
One of the major complaints about the Nokia N82 and any other pre-FP2 devices is the built-in gallery:
- It has no “folder-to-scan” option. All readable files are cramped in it, including the annoying support images from
installed applications. - It has no sorting nor filtering options
- Videos and images are combined in it which is absurd.
- Has the album feature but renders it useless
- It tends to be slow, especially if you store a lot of media files
Pros:
- It’s fast.
- Provides different viewing options
- Can sort images by name, date, size or format
- Allows managing of images with folder manipulation
- Specify favorite folders to be scanned for images
- Slideshow options are more customizable, and has extra transition
effects - Faster image zooming and panning
- Handy dandy keypad shortcuts
Cons:
- No indication of how many images were found.
- Cannot insert text or clip arts when editing images
- A not so friendly user interface combined with poor help content

Viewing Options
Way better than the s60 gallery.. Resco PV offers several options on how it will display your files. Depending on your preference, you can choose different combinations of three viewing options. Two thumbs up here...
- All Images or by Folders (folder tree)
- List or Grid View
- Small or Large Icons.

Set Folders to Scan for Images
Yes! The most prominent feature that the built-in gallery is lacking! Folders-to-scan for images is present in Resco PV. You can limit folders to be scanned for images by setting "Standard" folders (marked with a star icon). When you are in All Images viewing option, only images from the folders you set will be displayed. A very convenient feature indeed!
Zooming and Panning
Almost all of our images are in their full 5 megapixel glory. More often than not, zooming is needed when viewing pictures. And zooming with the built-in gallery is slooow. Panning while in zoom mode? Simply irritating. You’ll need to press the dpad repeatedly just to get a one step panning adjustment..
On Resco PV, zooming and panning is a joy, I tell you! One time quick loading when you try to zoom, after that, everything is instantaneous! Smooth panning and instant zooming up to 1600% (this is overkill i think), nothing more I can ask for. See video below (sorry for the video quality, recorded using a webcam T_T):
Image Editor
There’s also an image editor, and it's better than the built-in gallery’s (or at least for me). It’s faster, and you have more control on color adjustments (rgb). Screenshots below:
Also, you'll have the option to set the jpeg compression when saving an edited image and specify the new image's file name as well. Inserting clip-arts, frames and text is missing, but for me it's not a big problem. Red-eye reduction though is not present. I find it useful sometimes, guess I’ll just open up my gallery if I want to use it (or make sure that I use Red Eye as the flash mode for night shots).
Image Information
This is my favorite, I love how Resco paid attention on presenting image information. I usually do image comparisons and keypad shortcuts for easier access makes the built-in gallery a total loser. Using Resco PV, by simply pressing 5, information about the selected image is displayed. And pressing the left soft key will lead you to the Exif details! Very neat!
Slide Show
There are 11 slide effects to choose from plus the Random transition option. There's Random Image Order also that adds a sort of excitement, when waiting which image might appear next during the show. Same as the built-in gallery, you can also set the duration of each slide and set your favorite mp3 as a background music. The good part is that, with Resco PV, you can create new sets of slide shows from selected images and save it for later viewing. Maybe it's just me, but I like the built-in gallery's slide show presentation than this. On the s60 gallery, zooming and panning during animation really gives more life to the show than that on Resco's. What do you think?
Manage Images
If you want to group your images by folders, no need to open up your favorite file manager. You can directly manage your folders directly on Resco PV. You can create, rename, delete, move folders and transfer your images from one location to another easily when in Folder Tree view. Such a great feature! (hands down)
And More Useful Settings for your Satisfaction
If the built-in gallery has little to no settings, indulge yourself with Resco PV for it presents you with several settings from sorting, image rotation, backlight, slideshow, image rotation and more. You can even set this application to be the default viewer for several image file types.

Overall, I am completely satisfied with Resco Photo Viewer. It does all the s60 gallery can do plus more! I miss the fancy animation and stuff from the built-in gallery, but hey, who needs it more than functionality? I find the user interface quite confusing though, as well as the weak help utility. I believe Resco needs to pay attention to this.
