Have You Upgraded Your N82 Firmware Yet To v20.0.062? Tips For Upgrading...

Well its finally here. The new Nokia N82 firmware. I've been seeing reports all over the internet of people starting up their PC Suite and Nokia Software Updater and downloading the newest firmware, version 20.0.062.

Tips before you upgrade:

- Even with the User Data Preservation feature of the N82 that keeps all your applications, settings, calendar entries, email accounts, etc. - Still backup your phone before updating. Use the backup tool in pc suite and backup all your important stuff. You never know when something can go wrong.

- Make sure you have a secure and fast internet connection. Make sure your connections are plugged in good.

- Set your phone on a flat surface like a desk or table. Don't put the data cable where a dog or person will hit the cable and disturb the update process. You can brick your phone like this then your in a mess of trouble.

- When your update says that its finished the phone might look off like its dead. Leave it alone for 5-15 minutes sometimes it takes awhile to boot up. Eventually it should boot up on its own after the update.

- Make sure your battery is fully charged before the update.

- I personally try not have anything running in the background on the computer and disable the screensaver just to ensure nothing goes wrong.

If anyone else has any tips please share in the comments below. Let us know if you've successfully upgraded to the newest N82 firmware.

Also check out this article by Steve Litchfield from All About Symbian. He has a few screenshots of the new firmware, showcasing the new features including geotagging and flash 3 support.

I'm all updated too. Location Tagger was kinda kewl cause it would tell you while the GPS was trying to get a lock. Looks like the new camera update doesn't. Just yes or no.

My method of upgrading. Plug it all in. Start it. Shower. Come back later. :)

If you're using Windows Vista and the "Windows Host Service Layer" (or similar, I don't know the exact name) crashes during Update, don't worry, just kill Software Updater in Windows Taskmanager (But don't disconnect your N82!) and try it again. Now NSU should recognize your phone and it will offer you to retry the update. Now it should work, at the beginning it shows an estimated duration of about 15 Minutes, but my N82 was updated after about 5 Minutes.
I only wrote this little tutorial, "herrmo" from the German "Telefon-Treff" found this way of updating a N82 on a Vista-PC.

Sorry, if my English is bad, but I'm from Germany, too.
Of course I updated my N82, too!

i dont know what the deal is here, but i still cant get the flash to work. dont know what i am doing wrong or if there is a setting in there somewhere.. firmware shows correct version, but every time i click on youtube video, realplayer comes up and doesnt play the clip -- same thing as before the update..

any ideas?

Anonymous said...

You have to go to the classic version of youtube.

When you go to view a video, you have to click on the little icon to start the flash video.

my software updater cannot detect The latest update, it only has the version 11.0.117 update available and says my software is up to date. any solutions to this? -nick from malaysia

Is your software updater 1.4.36? I downloaded the new updater this morning.

Anonymous said...

yes it is 1.4.36. im still not sure why i couldn't get the latest firmware update, my update manager has nothing more to update and my nokia software updater is already up to date :) -nick

Anonymous said...

even though i updated it still crashes applications sometimes. Especially the browser. And realplayer opens when on youtube. Very grainy videos.

@nick: ("yes it is 1.4.36. im still not sure why i couldn't get the latest firmware update, my update manager has nothing more to update and my nokia software updater is already up to date :) -nick")

Maybe the Update has not been released yet for your Product Code. Every Phone has a Product Code (not the IMEI, but a number like 0549174). I think the Firmware has been released for European Firmwares (maybe others, too, but appearently not for the Malaysian one) only, so you have to wait a while. Another reason could be that your Phone is branded (is it the right word for phones that have a different menu, e.g. containig a design of your provider), for these ProductCodes, the Update will maybe released in some weeks

Sorry for my English again, I'm from Germany

same for me here in the UK, got the latest version fo the updater but phone upto date, wont update with this new firmware...yet! :-(

same problem, phone wouldn't update to the latest firmware.

read my comment above. your phone has the wrong Product Code. Either you wait until the update is released for your product code or you cahnge it using a semi-legal app (i won't tell you the name, but maybe you can google it. ater changing your product code (you still can see the original one under the battery) you can easily update your N82

@Lukas
Hey, Thanks for replying and with my own research i found what nokia had to say about it at
"http://www.nokia.com.my/A4759040#faq35"
under the troubleshooting section. So that pretty much confirms what you just said in the above comment. I guess i have to wait till the update gets here in Malaysia. -nick

Updated the firmware no problems period!!!
still having trouble with viewing the video's through the video centre though. When I try to play it it plays it for 2-3 sec and then it goes back to the menu screen. I thought that this is probably the firmware issue and that upgrading to the newwest 20 something will take care of this but it doesn't. Anybody else got this problem? And yes the mobitubia is still better for viewing the youtube videos.....
Thanks

i dont know u people has noticed or not but i have tested it with the last firmwares there was a slight distortion on inbuild speaker and now with this v20 its gone i have played the same song at same kbps and ther is no distortion

Updated and now holding zero does _not_ open the web browser. I've read some others had this problem too, and some did not.

Holding _1_ now shows a menu with a selection for "Voice mailbox" or "Internet call mailbox" and I have to hit OK. I think this is a new and unwanted feature, but I did recently install the gizmo client.

When I type numbers to make a phone call, the numbers are now white with a grey background. Previously they were black on a white background. The grey background is very plain and would look better with some sort of border, but it will produce less glaring light when making calls in dark places (like in a car at night).

btw, my phone is one of the ones where holding the # sign does _not_ activate the silent profile, and it still does not after this update. It would be a nice feature imo (actually, I'd rather be able to assign it so that it would pop up the google search program).

But, maybe the # behavior is a clue for the web browser behavior?

Just updated to V20. Everything went smoothly. For the first N82, about 104 MB were downloaded und the software was pushed to the mobile. Total time: 12 minutes. The second one was updated in about 4 minutes without a new download of the firmware.

Janaka said...

Things went ok for me too.. it was about 108Mb, it took some time for the download but installation happened in about 7-8 mins. Phone got bootup about 2 o 3 times. Something like a safe mode bootup also did happened.

Anyway now I feel like still Location Tagger beta gives the best features. Didnt find a way of viewing the tagged information using the phone.

Please help.

My phone shows "Estimated time left: 15 minutes", but it has been doing so for 45 minutes now. The progress bar has stopped at 15% or so. What should I do? Can I cancel the update or will it ruin my phone?

Well, my phone survived it seems, despite that I disconnected the cable during the update. A word of advice to n82 users: stay away from vista. I read of other users who had similar problems and used XP i stead to do the update - with great success.

I am updating now.... It has been updating for more than 30 mins, it still says "Estimated time left 15 mins" Progress bar is still at around 20%... There is nothing on the phone. Blank. I am using vista, not so smooth sailing...

Mike Macias said...

wow. looks like vista is not the way to go for updating your software.

did you guys figure out a way to fix this?

good luck...

Anonymous said...

i turned off my windows fire-wall while updating, it's faster.

Anonymous said...

i'm using vista and upgrading went smooth...sorry to hear that ppl are having trouble with it....i also used vista to update my old N95-1 and it worked fine...i'm not sure if vista is the problem

Anonymous said...

Thank you very much Lukas you are a great man !
i did the same as you did and it worked
guys >> just kill the prosses when the NSU stoppes
then open it again and press reinstall
and then retry without disconntecting the phone as mantioned in the program >> good luck for all

Before upgrading you'd better get your sd card out of your phone. This might cause the slow gallery problems some of our friends are mentioning above!

Anonymous said...

guys thanks so much for discussing the vista problem here!!! i had such a scare that my darling n82 was gonna just die when the NSU crashed during update! but i didnt the whole task manager kill and *whew* its fine! im so excited, cant wait to check out the famous geo tagging!!

@ Amazing Kitten... It sounds like you have a problem with the memory card and you should first backup all your images and video then format the card. But obviously you need to get your phone back working. Take the battery out and then put it back in. Try to turn it on again. Good luck, but it sounds like you may have bricked your phone. Do you live near a Nokia Care Center?

I updated my N82 on a XP laptop, because I couldn't use the updater on my regular Vista laptop.

However, now that i'm trying to connect the phone to media player on the vista, they can't seem to find one another. Has anybody experience the similar issue?

updated sucsesfully. checked with lot of applications and still working fine except, after loading "total recall" (call recording software) and press and hold the menu key to see open applications, phone stucks and non of the buttons working including the power key. had to remove the battery to switch it off.

Mike Macias said...

@ Mike...Did you resolve your issue yet? I have no experience with Vista.

@ Elvis...is Total Recall now unusable with the latest firmware?

Anonymous said...

A question... i just bought my N82.. do i straight away update this version of the firmware or do i update the previous version as well?

Mike Macias said...

Did you get the black version? Right now all black n82's have the latest firmware, no need to upgrade. If you have the silver version you might want to plug it into pc suite and see if you need to upgrade.

Please help. NSU has been running for 30 mins and it still says 15 minutes remaining. It's been like that for 30 mins and my phone is still blank. Pls help.

How do you get rid of the "share online" and "my nokia" applications that got installed with the latest firmware update? I can't use the "my nokia" because it's not supported in the U.S. and I don't share pictures. I tried going through application manager but it's not listed.

I just pressed *#0000# and the phone already has this 'New' version installed.
Sounds like I'm lucky (I bought the phone new in May 2008).
