A few weeks ago I promised an article about how I sync my Nokia N82 music library perfectly with my computer. After much delay, a broken N82, and a re-formatted home PC, the article is finally here. I noticed in the comments from my last article many of you are using MediaMonkey to sync music and cover art to your Nokia S60 device. I’m happy to say that I’m on the same page as many of you. I use the free version of MediaMonkey for all of my music needs.
Right now I have a massive 16gb microSD card in my N82 and a 10gb music library. Needless to say my entire library fits on my phone so pushing “Sync” works great in MediaMonkey. If you don’t have enough memory on your card to sync the entire library, you can simple drag and drop entire albums at a time to your device from MediaMonkey. This program can also sync playlists and podcasts! Holy crap it’s about time we get this functionality. I personally haven’t tried syncing a podcast yet, but thanks to Ricky’s mega review of MediaMonkey we know it’s possible. I gotta give props to the Guru – I hadn’t heard of MediaMonkey before reading that.
Now… Onto The Cover Art dilemma:
MediaMonkey makes it extremely easy to sync your cover art of each album to your S60 device. Keep in mind the file of the image must be saved as cover_front.jpg to ensure that the S60 Music Player picks it up.
Steps to configure album art on MediaMonkey and the N82:
1. Tell MediaMonkey how to handle cover art. Go to Tools>Options>Tags & Playlists.
For image location choose “Save image to tag (if possible) otherwise save to album folder”. For image file name type cover_front.jpg to let the program know how to save the filenames of the album art.
2. Tag new cover art. Right click on an album in your library and choose “Auto-tag from web”.
This will bring up the screen below. You can either clean up all your tags for the record, or simply uncheck the tags you don’t need, while leaving the Cover Art checked.
Now your album should be tagged with the proper image. To remove other image/album art tags simply right click on the album, go to Properties>Album Art. If you see other image files besides the “Cover (front) file”, you can remove them to keep everything as clean as possible. Or you can leave them incase your other devices use other tags and filenames.
So far the free version of MediaMonkey works perfectly for me. There is a payed version which gives you more features, but so far I haven’t needed it.
You don’t have to use MediaMonkey to get your N82 album artwork looking good – just as long as the filename of the artwork is cover_front.jpg you should be fine.
I’m looking forward to seeing what all of you use with to control your music library, hopefully this article can help you out. Keep in mind this should work for all S60 devices including the Nokia N95, N85, N86, N78, N96, 5800, E71, E66, E75, etc.
