The N82 And Ubuntu. Does Anyone Have Any Tips?

First off I'd like to say sorry for the lack of posting in the past week. I put in about 65 hours at work cuz my partner was on vacation. I also ran into a problem today that I'm hoping maybe some of you can help me with. It's not really that much of a problem but I do need some pointers.

See I decided to give Ubuntu another shot since I haven't used it in a long time. Last year I broke my installation of Ubuntu and didn't bother fixing it. Today I re-installed Ubuntu and accidently erased my entire hard drive. All my pictures from the past 5 years are gone. You have no idea how bummed I am about this. Anyways, I'm stuck with Ubuntu. No more Windows. I think it's a great alternative to Windows but of course it lacks support in the Nokia section. There is no Nokia PC Suite for Linux. I need to know if anyone knows of any programs that will help me keep my N82 and Ubuntu synced up. I have a bluetooth dongle that I'm hoping will work. So far I can connect and see my files, but for some reason I'm getting an error when trying to transfer mp3s between devices. Does anyone know of a good solution?

I'm hoping I can at least sync my music, videos, and photos. If there is a solution to messaging and calendar functions that would be awesome.

For anyone interested I'm going to be posting an article about my experience with the N82 and Ubuntu after about a week. So keep checking back for that and more application reviews and themes for the Nokia N82. Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

This doesn't really answer your ubuutu question but might help you retrieve the pictures.
Take a look at the link because things are not physically deleted from hard drives so there is a way to resurrect.

The article is windows based you might need to go back to windows before doing any retrieving.

Wow that's a real bummer about losing your photos. I've almost lost my photos several times but sometimes I'm lucky enough to be able to recover it ( I stuck the hard drive in the freezer ). I now backup my photos on a separate hard drive and DVD ( 2 backups just in case :] photos are priceless ). While you erased your hard drive it's still possible to recover your files. The less data you save on your computer the higher the chance of recovering them. Since if you keep installing and downloading stuff, those files will overwrite your previous files and photos. Technically your photos are still on the computer, just not visible. I typically use a program called "GetDataBack" to recover my files. Though you need to put your current hard drive into a different computer or use it as an external since you need to save your photos to a different hard drive. You can't recover the photos on the same hard drive, otherwise you'll be overwriting the files you're trying to save. If you need any more help or have any questions feel free to ask me :D

I use the KDE version of Ubuntu (Kubuntu). I have not tried to sync calendar or contacts yet. A few pointers would be KDE PIM, Evolution, Gnokii, kitchensync. I am pretty confident it should be able to sync contacts and calendar via bluetooth. _Syncing_ your music might be a different story, but I have no problem transfering files with BT/WLAN.

Perhaps I will look into syncing this week myself and give you some more pointers :)

There is a easy way: Use the USB-cable to connect your N82 to your ubuntumachine. The N82 will behave like an external harddrive, just use the DATAMODE. Don't forget to "safely remove" the connection or at the shell prompt do a "sync;sync"...

The only problem is, that you can access only the memory card in this way. What you should do is to make a backup of your phone memory to the memory card (Menu -> Tools -> Utilities -> Memory, then Options -> Backup phone memory). Now you can save the content of the backup folder to your computer. Restoring is in a similar way, choose Restore phone memory from the Options menu.

For transfer of files between phone and computer I recommend the SIC! FTP client (mentioned in your blog already). Just use it via WLAN, much quicker than going USB.

Otherwise, take the memory card out of N82, use a card reader to transfer the data.

Furthermore, connecting to the net via Bluetooth -> N82 -> GPRS is no problem.

Sorry for your turn of bad luck on the data loss.. Not wagging my finger saying "told you so", but you now have new-found incentive to backup data.

On the Linux side, there's a thing called TimeVault. It's like Mac OS X's Time Machine, but for Linux. Lifehacker has an article about setting it up.

Lastly, here's a tutorial for syncing an E61i to Evolution. Should mostly be the same for an N82.. It's even based around Ubuntu Hardy.

http://sidrit.wordpress.com/2008/07/03/nokia-e61i-sync-with-evolution-on-ubuntu-804/

On the Windows side, there's always NTBackup or Windows Backup in Vista Ultimate.

The ~$100 you'll invest in an external drive to backup data to is very much worth it!

I just use a simple cardreader, since the speed of the n82 usb connection itself is far too slow for transferring files. Card reader is much faster. I don't do calendar syncing or anything like it. Still need to investigate that some time.

I hope the next n82 update will come in an 'over the air' version, as i don't feel like installing windows somewhere again for a firmware update.

Stop what your doing on the Ubuntu machine! On a separate machine look for file recovery software on the net (in windows), im not sure if things are any different for recovering files from a Linux installed machine. You will have to pull the hard drive out and stick it into the other machine and scan the drive for the files using software since they are pictures you may be able to recover them as long as they havent been overwritten by the linux installation.

You might even find software in Ubuntu.

An easy way of synchronising your calender can be Google Calendar. I sync all my appointments with the online Google Calender, and my ubuntu machine with Thunderbird is also synchronising with this Google Calendar. Great thing is that you can check your calendar everywhere, sync your calendar everywhere, and you always have a backup.

Hey everyone. Thanks for all the pointers. I'm so happy to say that I got all my files back. 20 gigs worth of music and photos that I cherish dearly. Thanks so much to a free program called TestDisc and PhotoRec. It made it so easy. If anyone needs to know about this let me know.

Now I can finally start enjoying my N82 and Ubuntu. I'll let you know how it goes.

@Ronald: You cannot update the calendar in Thunderbird (it is read-only), but have to do it on the Google web pages?

@Mike: Well done, lucky you...

Best regards
Gorm

I've been using Ubuntu for 2 years now and stayed with Nokia phones. I've tried many programs and ways of connecting. Here is the best solution that works for me today:

For music, insert your memory card into your pc/laptop and deal with it like a regular usb drive. You can use the rsync command to sync files.

The most basic way to use rsync is like this (command goes into the terminal):
rsync -av /path/to/source/directory /path/to/target/directory
For example, let's say your username is alice and you wanted to back up your home directory to your external hard drive that mounts at /media/usbdrive, you would use the command
rsync -av /home/alice /media/usbdrive

If rsync doesn't seem sophisticated enough for you, you can type
man rsync

But I simply copy and paste my music files.

You can also browse files on Nokia via bluetooth, it is easy to connect and use.

For syncing contacts I use zyb.com You can do that to backup sms too.

For calendar I use CalSync60 and Google Calendar.

This should do it. Stay with Ubuntu, it will be worth it. You will see.

To Ronald: How do you sync with Google Calendar ? Directly or via 3rd party site/program ?

I know this has nothing to do with the topic, but i was thinking is there a karaoke app for the n82???

@ Matias. I haven't seen one but I'll look out.

@ everyone. I've been doing pretty good so far iwth my N82 and ubuntu. I can send files over bluetooth to my n82 from the computer.

but for the life of my can't send a file from my n82 to the computer. everytime i try it says sending fails.

When i get home I'm going to try some of these tips that you guys posted recently.

Thanks again.

Glad to hear you got your files back. Losing all my photos and videos would haunt me forever. Since your photos have experienced a near death experience, perhaps you'll be more prepared now. Backup frequently!

I use Scheduleworld to sync contacts, calendar, google etc. Also provides a good backup.

Rsync with the phone in datamode is a good solution, as is unison.

Hmmm I wonder if amarok sees the phone as a media device???

If you use Thunderbird, there is a plugin to sync the contact data over bluetooth called Bluezync:

Hi. I've just lost loads of my holiday videos and photos on my N82 and would love to recover them. How does Testdisc and Photorec work? Any help would be really appreciated. I'm not exactly technology minded so laymans terms would be good!
