One of the three jobs I have involves lots of down time and sitting around while not getting paid. Pretty much I have to wait sometimes up to 2 hours a day just to have the opportunity to work and on occasion I have to go back home without a job and wait for the next day. The job is really good pay when you actually get a chance to work, so in the long run it's worth it.
Besides the reasons, during this down time I thought it would be a good idea to get some work done here on the blog and on some of my other side projects. Right now I'm sitting in my car using my N82's data connection to connect my laptop to the world wide web. To do this I have two choices. Either tether my phone to the laptop via Nokia PC Suite or use the popular application JoikuSpot to transform my phone into a Wifi hotspot.
I decided to use the first method. I might be wrong, but I think Wifi would use more battery than over a data cable. Saving battery life is crucial for me since my car charger is broken.
Steps to tethering your Nokia N82 data connection with your computer:
1) Start Nokia PC Suite on your computer. Connect your phone to PC Suite with your data cable or bluetooth.
2) Once connected, click on the 3rd icon in top row of PC Suite, it says Connect To Internet. You will then be presented with the One Touch Access window.
3) The first time I tried to connect it failed. I had to go into the settings and select AT&T United States and Nokia N82 USB as the modem. After that click connect and everything should work fine and connect.
Of course the N82 doesn't have North American 3g bands so I'm relying on an Edge connection. It's a really slow connection, but not painfully slow. I'm still able to get the basic stuff done. If you try loading a large website or downloading a file over 1mb it's not even worth it. I've found that the Opera browser renders websites much faster than Firefox so when I'm tethering I prefer using Opera. Times like this I really wish we had 3g on the N82 in North America. This would make this phone almost perfect in my eyes. You might not want to try this if you don't have an unlimited data plan with your carrier, and even AT&T has stipulations saying you can't do this with their unlimited data plan. Try At Your Own Risk. But they haven't said anything as long as you don't use it on a daily basis or download huge mp3s and movies. I've been doing this for years no and have never heard a complaint from Cingular or ATT. Also keep in mindwhen a call comes through the connection is interrupted because Edge can't stream voice and data at the same time.
Tip: Make sure you don't have any background processes on your computer that might be using the internet. A few programs I had open in my System Tray were checking for updates on their servers, includines Windows Update. It's best to disable these so that you don't use data thats not needed.
Overall I'm happy with my experience tethering the internet from my N82 to the computer. The ease of use is amazing and it's such a breeze to setup and convenient.
Have you tried tethering with your Nokia N82? If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Hi.
First of all, thank you for some great tips and guides!
I've tried JoikuSpot for the first time today on my N82 and it works very well.
Unfortunately I done have a "free data limit" (3G) subscription at my phone company (I pay $2 for 10 mb data). So I am properly not going to use this great application very much.
But again, JoikuSpot works very well and is very simple to use.
With a 3G subscription by the phone company you can forget a Huawai E220 3G-modem and just use your N82 with your laptop. Great!
Cheers,
Ulrik, Denmark
I was in Louisiana a few days ago. I took my mother to Lake Charles so she could play the slot machines. The casino had no free wifi.
I tried to tether my Nokia N800 but couldn't really do much. I looked at the N82 and I noticed I had no E symbol. I was tethering on GPRS. 1G is really slow and my connection seemed to go out often.
I decided to stay offline.
@ Ulrik, indeed JoikuSpot is a great application. Oh how I wish we had 3g in the states with the n82.
@ Al. Did she win some money? It's slow on E, can't imagine GPRS. never tried it.
I also live in California and was wondering do you use Cingular? If so what plan and how much do you pay for your data plan ( and what is it called )? Does it work if you're in motion? Like if you're sitting the back of the car while on the highway. Sorry for all the questions, I don't really understand the plans on the Cingular site. Thanks.
hi Richard! Glad to see a fellow Californian here at the blog. Yes I use Cingular with the Unlimited Media Net Plan. It's only $15 a month plus 200 messages. I then pay an extra $5 a month for the unlimited messages to cingular customers. So in total for internet and texts i pay $20 a month. You don't need any other smartphone plans. Yes the connection works if your in motion, it makes no difference. If you plan on tethering a lot just be careful because technically Cingular can charge you extra for that. I only do it once in awhile.
Thanks for the response! I'll try it out for a month and see how it works out for me. It's a lot cheaper than I thought it'd be. I find WiFi to be quite unreliable. Most of the time WiFi connections are encrypted and the only places you can use them are at someone's house. It'll take a while for San Francisco to actually get free WiFi city wide. Again, thanks!
Hey Mike, I have a few more questions. This will probably help others who are looking for similar answers. I plan to use Opera Mini and so I was wondering if I had to properly set up the phone to use MediaNet. Also how long did it take for your plan to kick it after you purchased it? ( I purchased it online and I'm not sure if I'm suppose to receive an email confirmation in a few hours/days ) Lastly I may be interested in using Slick IM ( I'm not digging the colors :| ) but does it count as internet or text messages? If not I'll just stick with Meebo Mobile ( it looks nicer :D ). Thanks in advance!
Sorry for triple posting. But I want to thank you for answering my questions and for the great article on how to use the N82 for the laptop. I've also been browsing the site and find it to be extremely helpful to me and anyone that owns the N82. I'll constantly be checking out the blog. Keep up the good work!
Richard, thanks for the kind words i'm glad you enjoy this site.
Your data plan should kick in immediately. To use Opera Mini you won't have to do anything. It will ask you everytime you connect what connection you want to use and just select "AT&T Internet".
Slick IM is my favorite because it counts as data. Works great with my unlimited data plan. Oh and you can change the colors. I'm going to do a writeup about Slick soon so stay tuned.
Don't forget you can multitask. Hold down the menu button to see the open apps. When your using an application double tap the menu button to minimize it and go to the standby screen.
Hmm...when I launch One Touch Access it says No Modem Found. The N82 is connected via PC Suite.
Nevermind, I got it to work. I had to install the beta version of PC Suite ( 7.0.6.3 ). My speeds are 460kbps.
My mistake, it's more like 70kbps.. I'm not impressed, oh well.
I have been using it on a 3.5g network, got a speed of 460.8kbps using usb cable, I don't know if the n82 supports more (3.6/7.2Mbps anyone?) and I don't know if my speeds are limited and if I'd get higher speeds using a data sim.
hello Mike!
i thank you for the support and info you are providing us.
i am planning to buy a Nokia N82, and i found this blog thru Google search, i have been reading it since.
just wanted to let you know that i always tether my current Nokia 6120 classic to my laptop to use the internet. i live in Saudi Arabia for 9 months every year for my studies and our university campus does not provide fixed lines into the dormitories. so its kind of only way i can browse the internet. thankfully the mobile companies in Saudi Arabia have unlimited internet planes for customers and without restrictions (although it is very costly, US$ 93 a month)
and the best thing is all networks here are 3.5G and provide internet at speeds of upto 7.2Mbps.
the speed varies very much from place to place. in my hostel the best speed i got was 1.7Mbps, normally it stays at around 1Mbps. (i have seen people download at speeds exceeding 6Mbps)
@to anonymous who commented before me: the 460.8kbps is actually the connection between the comp and the phone, it does not present the net speed and it does not affect it. i have downloaded files at very high speeds when the tray was showing 115kbps and 460 kbps (you can actually change it to 921kbps too, but i am not going to explain it here)
one more thing
i find this wifi thing very interesting, i have always used it by USB cable, i must try this program after buying my Nokia N82 :) thanks once again
is it possible to connect laptop to n82 (usb or bluetooth) and use wifi connection of n82 to connect the laptop to the internet? Because i do not have 3g plan. I know this is very indirect but I just happen to require to do so. thxx
