Must-Have Applications On My N82. What Are Yours?

I have a nice collection of Symbian S60 applications on my Nokia N82. Some are must-haves, others are just there for rare use, but will be needed. I'm curious to see what other N82 users have installed. Check out my list of applications...

Here is a rundown of all the must-haves with a short description, in no particular order. Click the link to see articles about each application where you will also find a download link.

Google Maps. I can't leave home without it. Literally. I get the great privilege of fighting Los Angeles area traffic on a daily basis. Nothing comes in more handy than Google Map's traffic conditions. With the latest release you can now save favorites for quick reference to certain locations. Also your 'Places' are imported to Nokia Maps automatically, and vice versa. Nice job Google! Free

Calcium Calculator. Nothing scientific here. Basic calculations are all this simple little applications does. And somehow does it 10 times better than the built in S60 calculator! Free

CalSyncS60. Keep your Google Calendar and phone calendar on the same page. Warning: It's still a little buggy, in the beta phase. Free

Screenshot. Take screenshots of any screen on your phone. Free

Themes Icon. Get an icon to take you to your theme settings. I put this in my root menu. This is much easier than digging into your phone settings just to change your theme.

Y-Browser. Get a real file browser on your phone. Does ten times more than the built in file browser.

Slick IM. I have to say this instant messanger beats the hell out of some commercial applications. Google Talk, AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Jabber, are all supported. A message alert shows up next to the battery on your homescreen when you have a new message. The colors and sounds are all customizable. I simply love this application. Watch out for the battery life though, it kills it if you leave it running all day. Free

Mobitubia. My one-stop solution for everything Youtube. You have the full Youtube library, with the ability to create favorites and save clips to your memory card. It loads pretty fast even over an Edge connection. Free

Nokia Internet Radio. Talk radio, classical, jazz, rock, blues, rap, whatever gets you dancin is here. A great application for streaming internet radio to your N82. Also works great over Edge! Free

Shozu. Take alot of photos? Upload alot of photos? Have lots of destinations. This applications is for you. Facebook, Flickr, Blogger, Ovi, Wordpress, Youtube (yes videos), Blip.tv, Picasa, and many more are all supported. Send your photos to multiple destinations all at once if you'd like. Free

Sports Tracker. Great for recording GPS locations, tracking your place in the world, recording steps, distances, altitude, photos & videos, etc. I recently went on a hike and can now see my entire route. Free

Opera Mini. Great alternative to the Web Browser. If I'm to do some real heaving internet browsing, I always pop open Opera Mini. The websites load faster and I love the interface. One of the only non S60 native applications I use. This one is java. Free

Symella Peer To Peer. Once in awhile I just need to hear that song or get a certain file. Use Symella S60 to see if a fellow p2p user my let you borrow it. Free

Active Notes. The regular Notes application but ten times better. Gotta check it out. Free

Flixwagon. Stream live video to your Flixwagon account where others can see and leave comments. I love this service.

Thats all I can think of for now. I'll try to add to this article every month or so to keep you all updated.

I'm extremely curious to see what everyone has installed on your Nokia N82's. Do you enjoy any of these applications that I use? Any good recommendations? I'm all ears.

Have you tried Palringo? I find it to be a pretty good IM software too . Now sure how that compares with SlickIM.

My fav apps:
BT Switch - This app is to change BT status with a single click.
Sygic McGuider - A good GPS navigator with support for internal GPS.
Panoman - A good add-on to the camera.
Remind me - If you hav a lost call or unread sms, the phone reminds you with sound and vibration

Garmin - very good gps software.
VNES - awesome nintendo emulator. works perfect.

@ first post. I have tried palringo, but its been like 4 months. have they came out with a newer version. i really love how Slick gives me notifications on the standby screen. I know palringo was going to implement this, not sure if they have already. thanks for the heads up i'll check it out

@ Kimaro...BT switch is awesome. I haven't signed it for my current phone. Is it working with open signed yet?

Thanks for all the other suggestions. Device Status can be really handy.

Keep em coming

BTw..i'm interesting in buy a n82 or n95 nam 3...which one you think is better?? or you think that i need to wait for the new releases from nokia n series...

thanks...congrats for your site...from mexico

Hey Charlie. Let me tell you something. Does the thought of having a point & shoot camera on you 24/7 sound good? If so, then get the N82. Nokia won't be releasing anything with xenon flash for a long time. Xenon flash is great for night shots.

If not, maybe you want to wait for the Nokia N96 or E71. those should be out within the next 6 months but your looking at 600-800 dollars. or even longer for the next Nokia touchscreen which will blow away the iphone, but i doubt that will be released by the end of the year.

Your best bet is to get the N82 right now and shove it in your friends face! enjoy it, and take care of it. the resell value is good and you can sell it and get the newer phones. good luck.

ps. the n82 i think is better. the camera is better and it's more solid. the n95 has a larger screen and high speed internet in North America. it's up to you which you think is more important.

Half the applications listed are unusable for Canadians as our data is simply too expensive.

However I have to thank you Mike for revealing Symella to me. It is the coolest feature on my phone. If I'm at home and want to hear a song, I don't have to even get up and I'll have the song in 2 mins.

I wish they'd implement some sort of software where I could replace the function of the random silver button to the right of the dpad. Is it just me, or do people actually use that? I can think of at least 10 more efficient ways that could be used!

I guess I'll try your notes application, because I currently use the standard notes app to keep passwords and stuff and I'd like a little extra protection. Hopefully it'll have some sort of restricted access on certain notes.

Keep up the good work Mike - Oh and I should mention that I was on your arch rivals blog "n82blog.com" and read a post about the N82 having a scroll wheel but just not the software to back it up.

Have you heard anything about this? :) If so, possibly do a little research and let us know how to unlock that feature!

Best Regards,
Zak
@ Kimaro...BT switch is awesome. I haven't signed it for my current phone. Is it working with open signed yet?
I don´t know. I have an OPDA cert.
I think this app is a "must" on the standby screen

Mike Macias said...

@ Zak... You are right its sad that Canadians have such high data prices. Especially since the Nseries is so geared towards internet use and applications. I'm gonna try and find some more applications that will work without data. As you can see I use a crapload of data, AT&T must hate me. About that silver button, yeah its useless. Google "magickey for s60". its a new application that lets you re-assign the keys. I personally haven't tried it since I don't have a dev certificate yet to sign the application. Still working on it. About that article at the other blog, well he got his info from a post at my partners site www.everythingn82.com. i check out the post and there really isn't much proof of this. i need to see more pictures to believe it. that would be a great feature though.

@ Kimaro... I'm getting my cert soon so hopefully I can get it signed. It sounds great! Thansk for all the suggestions.

Hi Mike,I'm back and seems like I'm bit late here in the comments conference.Anyway I prefer Handy Calculator instead of the Calcium,it has this Shift(Pen) key activated secondary functions which were very useful for little calculations.
And x-plore instead of Y-Browser,its more windows like interface is attractive than the Y-browser which requires some more add-ons

This is totally an awesome blog! Totally handy for my N82, at least now it looks like a little laptop for me. :D Thanks man for putting these applications up! Hola from Malaysia! =)

Thanks for this very useful collection of links. I immediately wanted to install active notes on my n82, but had no luck. I only got the installer to work by first downloading the sisx file to my linux box and then transferring from there. The phone browser always thought it was a test file. After the finished installation, I get a "system error" screen when I launch the application. Tried the installation multiple times. Any of you have a solution to that? Googling did not retrieve much. Thanks, Derek

Anonymous said...

Im from Mexico. I just buy a N82 (prefered the better camera than N85's). I downloaded some apps you listed here. Thanks a lot, it is my first GSM/Symbian phone. =D

Anonymous said...

@Derek: I downloaded the sisx file from the box link by Opera, the standard web browser didn't work. Ben

Have you tried Money Manager from FlyingBirdSoftware.com

It is rather powerful application and has a right to be included to the TOP 10 list

I highly recommend Skype. Check out the link http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/. You won't find the N82 phone supported yet, but just pick the Nokia N95 instead. It works great!

Is there a way I can make programs autorun at startup? More specifically Conversation? I thought it would be integrated with the default text interface.

Nokia Vine
Geocache Navigator

Both programs are free and use the GPS feature for what can turn into plenty of outdoor fun. My new favorite hobbies.

The exterior feels a bit cheap and a lot needs to be done to improve the navigation buttons. There is also no US 3G support. If these flaws don’t matter much to you and if you are looking for a phone that offers great multimedia experience, Nokia n82 is what you’ve been looking for.
