Now that I've had a chance to play with the N82 black for a few weeks I can finally decide if I want to keep the original N82 silver color or buy a N82 black. Before I actually got a hands on with the black version all I saw was pictures, pictures and more pictures. From those pictures I pretty much knew I wanted the black, but the silver started growing on me. Because of the ridiculous amount of pictures going around the web I am not going to take any side by side shots of the two colors, instead you can click here to see the ones I posted about a month ago if you haven't got your fill.
After spending a few weeks with the N82 black beauty, I have fallen in love with it. At a glance it just looks so much better. Of course this is just personal opinion and bias for black phones. Before the N82 silver I had the N73 black and most of my previous phones were black. So of course it's up to the user. I can sit here and talk all day about how I like the color better, but what else?
To me all the keys feel a lot better on the black version. It's been two weeks with the phone and still no creaking from the d-pad. All the edges around the center button are evenly raised and have an equal feel all the way around when pressed. Like I said before the outer rim of the d-pad feels more raised arouned the center button, almost like it's cupping the center button giving it a very nice feel when you put your thumb on it. As for the number keys I have been getting a creaking sound when it's warm out and I'm texting alot. Right now in the room I'm in it's pretty cold and I hear no creaks. Once in awhile the C button makes a slight click sound, almost like it's sticking to whatevers underneath it, but it doesn't feel that way. There is no gap around the edges of the screen like some people have noticed on the titanium.
Another thing I've realized is there are no scratches or nicks on the phone yet, something that happened within two weeks of owning the titanium. Maybe I'm just treating this phone better, but honestly I feel like any little thing would add a scratch to the N82 titanium, especially around the Nokia label below the screen. One thing to remember though is the black is a fingerprint magnet. Holy crap sometimes I wipe it clean then five minutes later they are back again. I'm constantly wiping it clean with my sunglass cloth that now I'm keeping in my pocket regularly. Sometiems I wish they would've used more of a matte finish on the front, similar to the sides but slightly glossier than the sides. This is something I can live with though.

So what's the verdict? Obviously I'm gonna go buy a N82 black as soon as I have enough money. The build quality just seems alot better and I'm sold on the color. I have a feeling Nokia realized some of the small flaws of the original and tried to fix the problems with the black model and hopefully all newly made titanium models.

How many of you have switched over to the black, and are you happy with your choice? How about you the titanium owners? Are you happy keeping your silver beauty until the next best thing comes around?

I just have one question. Does changing the colour of my N82 cover change the build? Right now there's quite a few creaks as well as that gap above the screen.
i would definitely buy the black from the titanuim. aside from the tweaks mentioned, i wouldn't have to upgrade the firmware version, w/c may not be available her in the middle east. unfortuntely, they have raised the price for the black by about 50 bucks, which is irritating. are there titanium/silver with the latest firmware?
I am tempted to buy the black one!
But I think think the titanium will be the classic one after all.
There are to many other black phones about, but very few titanium phones.
Mike and people, i need an advice, my n82 when the screen is black i can see like 10 white points on the screen, they are little but im worried about them, my seller told me that if i send the phone, they´ll change it, but im not sure because of the cost (of course it is much less than the price of the phone), what do you think? should i send the phone? it is just a problem in this n82 or it is a problem in all n82??
@ first comment, i really doubt that changing the cover will do anything. I think the problem lies underneath the keypad. it's worth a try though you have nothing to lose as long as you don't break something.
@ miko...i bet if you wait a few weeks the price of the black will come down, especially with the release of the N78 soon. i'm not sure if there are silver models shipping with the latest firmware. i doubt they are shipping many silver models right now because of the high demand for the black.
@ Karl... you are right the titanium indeed will always be a classic. there are not many phones that look like it.
@ Matias... how does it look when the screen is turned on? do you notice any problems. who is the seller do they seem reputable. if they are offering a new one and you trust them i would do it.
Black is the way to go, granted I have no previous comparison since I have the black n82 and I LOVE IT!!!
the phone is crazy fast, great screen for a relatively small screen, better than n73 although I realize that some may disagree. I love the phone. I think it has become my favorice since I also own N 95-3
Who in their right mind would first buy a silver phone (before anyone knew about the black one), and then buy yet another exactly similar phone (except for the color)??
I mean.. are you people all drugdealers with endless bank-accounts?
In Norway, where I live, a N82 cost about 4500 NOK. According to todays rates, that is 902,64 USD, or 572,92 EURO / 454.91 GBP.
Although I agree fully that the black one looks ALOT better, will I waste that kind of money just to get a black phone? Hardly.
Ofcourse, i could sell the old one, but i will still loose about |1/4th of the price (if not more)..
Haven't anyone thought that perhaps Nokia will make exchangeable covers after they see all the posts about ppl switching to the black phone?
Something tells me a new, black cover will be somewhat more reasonable than 4500 NOK.
This is surely the best example of the "CONSUME CONSUME CONSUME" - sort of society we live in today..
Jeez...
@ tBakke,
Here is the thing. I'm gonna eventually sell my silver one. I can probably get $350 for it since it's still in great condition. Someone will buy it. By the time I'm ready and have the difference in money saved up I should be able to buy the N82 black here in the States for around $490. So in reality I'm paying $140 for a brand new phone that is made better.
I'm sure Nokia has interchangeable covers, but are holding back because they know people will go out and buy the black. Also it's rare when a new case feels as solid as the old once, simply because your dismantling the phone and putting it back together. Unless you do it perfectly, it's not the same and many aren't willing to take the risk. I've experience it on many phones including the N73.
OK... so I purchased the silver one when it first came out. Didn't like the look, but the features and build quality sold me.
When I saw the pictures of the then speculated black version, I actually thought I would still keep the silver one, until I physically saw one. Apart from the more appealing look, I think there is a difference in the build quality as well.
I sold my silver one for $400 and purchased the black one for $475, so all in all, I didn't have to worry about the endless bank account with ill gotten proceeds.
Admittedly, the titanium/silver N82 is in a class of its own; its glossy exterior is totally unique and has no close comparison!
But, imho, the black N82 still takes the cake :) I spent a while deciding between the two colours myself, but I'm 100% glad I picked the black one. My only worry about its alleged plastic appearance was in vain. It looks and feels fantastic in black and I can't see myself ever getting sick of it!
I can't explain why, but the black N82 just has so much more character, impact and appeal, and provides a really good contrast and framing to the screen and the print on the phone (eg. NOKIA logo and keypad numerals).
To me, there's no debate at all - the black N82 is undoubtedly superior!!
Hi mike,
I have a nokia n82 black edition it is awesome. I never got tired
looking at it.It looks magnificent and has got a peculiar appeal to it.
The features are fabulous as you all know and build quality is tremendous.
"BLACK" for me anyday as i have fallen in love with it.
hello to everyone !
did you notice that the SAR value
of N82 changed from 0.62 W/kg to
1.35 W/kg at the latest Users Guide?

Any comments ?
This made upset many users who bought this device among other things because of its previously low SAR emission. Those people are shocked by the new hi SAR emission and unfortunately Nokia haven’t managed yet to explain them what’s going on, since their old N82 booklets states a SAR of 0.61 but the newer ones 1.35 !!!
I have had the N82 silver for almost 6 months now, its a fine phone, really fast, great camera, but like other people I'm getting that slight creak noise under the centre button, but generally the build quality is great. Despite this I would not bother changing to the black N82, as I just don't see the point as there are newer better phones coming soon
