Is The Screen Brightness Issue Fixed With The N82 Black, Or Latest Firmware?

This is a question I know many have. It is one of the questions I've had myself for the longest time. Has Nokia fixed the N82's dull screen brightness? Something so minor can make my overall satisfaction of the phone much greater.

So what do you guys think? Has the problem been fixed with the N82 black or in the latest firmware of the titanium? To me the answer is no. The screen brightness is still considerably darker than other comparable phones like the N73 and N95. I've seen some people say the screen has gotten a little brighter, but I'm just not seeing it. Right now I'm using the N82 black and I'm pretty let down by the screen on my particular phone. Now get this. I've held another N82 black and the screen was brighter. White backgrounds on websites show up white like they should, unlike mine. They are showing up off white, almost creme colored. What gives? This tells me that maybe it is in fact a hardware issue with some of these phones. Maybe something isn't plugged in all the way on my specific N82.

But then get this (again)...

Yesterday I managed to freeze up the phone. I pulled out the memory card and inserted a different one with the phone on. Obviously the N82 didn't like that and locked up. But something odd happened. THE SCREEN GOT BRIGHTER! Well shit now I'm just scratching my head. I mean it was bright. Brighter than the N95 at it's highest setting. I wish someone else would've been there to make sure I wasn't crazy, but I'm not. The damn phone wouldn't unfreeze so I had to remove the battery and restart it. Of course turning it back on put the screen brightness back to the same dim level it was at before. I've also started noticing something I've never seen before. Once in awhile the brightness gets super bright for about a second, then goes back down. I remember some users saying a while back ago that the brightness gets brighter when using a certain application. I can't remember which it is maybe someone can refresh my memory.

So obviously we're back to square one. A firmware issue - the problem lies in the brains of the N82. This CAN be fixed by a firmware update if Nokia chooses too. Maybe they are just not accepting the fact that this is a problem. Now I know this isn't a huge problem and definitely not a deal breaker when purchasing the phone, but damn it would really be nice to have the option of a brighter screen. I don't think we're asking for a lot here. I've seen some comments around the community saying "sure the screen isn't as bright as other Nseries devices, but it's bright enough". Who knows maybe I'm just blowing this out of proportion. Like I said this is still a great phone and I wouldn't trade it for anything else in the Nseries lineup, even with the lack of North American 3g that I recently got a taste of on the N95-4.

Are you happy with your screen brightness? Or do you agree that we should have the option to make it brighter and up to par with other Nokia devices?

Hopefully tonight I'll have time to take side by side pictures with the N73 so you guys can see the difference in brightness yourself.

Hello !
The screen is brighter at start-up.
Also,if you install sygic navigator,
you can see the difference

Yeah, I've written about this several times. AFAICS it's a firmware decision by Nokia to try and keep the battery life decent.

Would be nice to have the option though!

Hi!
With Sygip app the screen is brighter...
The same if using Smartsettings app when you turn autolock on and then unlock it from the stand by screen!

Anonymous said...

so it's a s/w problem (?).
Nokia should also used it to N95
for battery saving ...

hey guys. with the sygip application does it make the phone brighter in all other screens or only when that application is being used? same goes for smart settings.

yes Steve L. it would've been a great option lol.

Mike, it is a software problem. if people want to save battery they could just lower the settings to whatever they want. right?

aren't symbian smartphones considered "open to anything" by nokia?

this is strange. my black n82 seems to be really bright. i even have the lighting set to the middle... by the way i'm using the latest firmware and my phone has funny characters on the keypad.

I have also noticed that when playing the frozen bubble game, occasionally the screen will get brighter and then darker again. Open it up and see for yourself.

Only when Sygic app is running...
About Smartsettings only when you unoc your phone in stand by mode for about second... (You have to enable autolock...)

Those are not solutions but only to verify that it CAN BE BRIGHTER!!!

Screen can be brighter when:
-Starting up or booting up just before hands comes out.
-Calendar events alarm comes off.
-Clock bar appears just after Text messages arrive and before backlight turns off.

So, N82 really can be brighter. Nokia please give us the choice to have brighter screen or long battery life. I believe this is not too much to ask. A Nokia 6300 also a 16M color screen phone is so much brighter.

Aside from low brightness, there is also that low sound volume issue. Inside, based on schematics, N95 and N82 uses the same class-D amplifier and i believe the speakers also. So why not make it louder?

Why should Nokia leave out something which is pretty much basic?!?!

I also have a silver and a black version of the N82. It seems that the Black version isn't as bright as the Silver one. Is there someone else who can conclude the same when booting the devices?

Hi guys, my n82 black is like yours.
But I've changer the parameters in light menu, and now the quality of the screen is really better.
Don't forget that the n82 has a light captor which regulate the intensity of the screen and the illumination of your keypad.

That's one of reasons qhich gives this sensation.

The screen get's occasionally brighter because the keypad lights go off when the room or outside lights are bright enough.
But we do want a brighter screen all the time!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looking at picture taken with camera is really frustrating, compared to the N73 or N95

I’m really confused about u guys. I’m from Asia & mine is made in Beijing. I’ve compared it with my friend’s 2 months old N73 where both of my N82 (latest firmware) & his N73 were set to one step below the highest brigtness settings. N82 is brighter & much more sharper than N73.

I don’t know about u guys but for me my N82 has enough brightness. I don’t even need to set the brightness to maximum!

2 months ago I got the N82 silver. I had to turn the brightness ALL the way up, and it still wasn't as bright as my N73 half way up.

It was almost as if someone tinted the screen!

K, so i got another one, and now it's fine...

hope that it's just fw, so when everyone complains they can change the settings...

otherwise I see a huge recall... and no-one wants that!

Yes, i tested side by side, n82 max brightness is 3/5 or my nokia n73 max brightness. I hate this!
But How come anonymous say n82 is very bright? Well, if its a firmware issue and they fixed that, wouldnt the battery life be lower? so maybe to preserve battery life, they will not fix that. Can all of us write a pettition to nokia. its because of the dullness that i decided to buy n78 instead of n82. But if nokia fix the brightness, i will buy n82 right away.

From what I can gather from this discussion, the light intensities of the n82's vary quite a bit. Anonymous said that the n82's have a "light captor which regulate the intensity of the screen" A simple light dependant resistor (LDR)? Do the n73's have this also? If not, it might explain the variance in the measurements.
Otherwise it would seem that different LDR's are used, or that the LDR's have variance themselves.
Where is this element located on the phone?

The N82 is a bit dull compared to the N95 and N73. But when I am at the standby screen or at the menu or I am using any other application, When i receive a call when I am doing any of these things, The screen suddenly grows very bright. Then again, Its NOKIa's decision to update it in a future firmware.

LDR is on the front of the phone. Next to vga videocall camera.

My N82 screen is bad, but it's not lack of brightness thats the main issue - its the incorrect colours and poor contrast. Blues come out purple, and videos just look bad

Ive seen 7 other handsets, and they are all the same

n82 silver n n82 black theres a difference. if u purchase a n82 black n n82 silver n update them to v30. you will notice that n82 silver has poor screen quality n n82 black has better screen quality due to wat u pay for. black is better silver is average.
