This problem has been driving me nuts for about a week, which is how long I've had my auto-retrieval enabled in my Nokia N82's email application. I'm using the latest firmware, and keep in mind this never happened in previous firmware. I've been trying to get help with this problem over at Howard Forums and it turns out a few others have noticed the same thing. So far no solution.
So...
I'm looking to my readers that use the Email Application with IMAP. Do you have auto-retrieval enabled? If so are you able to specify the amount of headers you want downloaded to your phone's inbox? With the last firmware I was able to select 30 headers to retrieve AND have auto retrieval enabled, everything worked fine and dandy.
Now I can't have it both ways. If I want to have auto retrieval on, all headers are downloaded to my inbox. With Gmail I get tons of emails everyday and they just pile up in my inbox unless I archive them. I have over 5,000 emails in my inbox alone. Of course this is unnecessary, but with Gmail theres no reason to get rid of them. So what happens when I turn on auto retreival on my phone? Literally thousands of headers are downloaded to my N82, which of course brings it to a halt. My email application now becomes unusable and takes like 5 minutes just to bring up the application. This is a joke. I should be able to tell the phone to download the last X amount of headers from my inbox, just like before.
Below are the screenshots to prove it...
under the Retrieval Settings...
then this warning when I go to Automatic Retrieval and try to enable it!
And now when I go back into my retrieval settings, it won't allow me to specify the amount of headers, like I told you before. It gives me another warning that I must disable auto retrievals?
Now I don't know if Nokia & Symbian have done this on purpose, or maybe it's an accident when they were creating the latest firmware on the N82. All I know is the Nokia N82, besides being a multimedia powerhouse also is meant to serve the business side of customers. This really is killing it for me, now I have to worry about keeping my Gmail inbox cleaned out so my phone doesn't freeze up. I'm seeing people with the Nokia E90 having this same exact problem with their latest firmware.
Let me know if your having this problem. If so speak up so hopefully Nokia will fix it with a firmware update. If you have IMAP setup but don't use auto-retrieval, please try to replicate my problem and tell me if you get that same warning shown in the last screenshot.

Thanks, your blog has been very informative for a fellow N82 geek :-) like you. Been following your blog for a while now.
Anyways, getting to the point, I also use IMAp on my N82, and faces the same problem as you.
The solution is to disable email retreival and then specify the header amount. I've tested this successfully on the V20 firmware, so it should work for you too.
Glad to have been of help to you, if this helps you out
Glad you enjoy the blog. If I do your suggestion can I then re-enable auto retrieval? I've tried this and I'm still getting this problem.
So are you retrieving your headers automatically and \only receiving X amount? Thats my goal.
Thanks for the help I really appreciate it.

Yes, you can. I'm trying this as I speak to you. I've changed the retrieval amount from 30 to 50 and then to 5, and the folders update automatically.

Yes, I've set it to retreieve every 30 minutes, and for the hour, it seems to be doing just that perfectly.
Change all settings with the retrieval disabled. Enable it again, and then wait for a while after it says 'Updating mailbox'. You should see the changes..
Err.... you've missed the point of IMAP! - See my http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/How_to_Get_push_GMail_for_free.php
IMAP is push email and instant ALREADY. You don't need to do ANY auto-retrieval, and, as you've found, turning this on just confuses the heck out of the system.
Great blog, hope this helps you!
Hi Steve,
I've been through that post of yours before, which is where I picked up the idea of using IMAP instead of POP3.
Anyway,
To clarify what I mean by automatic retrieval, it is what you refer to as polling. What we're discussing is choosing the maximum number of messages that can be retrieved at one time.
This definitely seems to be a bug with the firmware, as Mike has pointed out...
Hi Steve. Looks like you didn't read my article correctly. Your article is great, and a perfect example of what my problem is. You mentioned in your article you can set your phone to make a connection to the server every 15 minutes right? In step 2 of your guide, the first screenshot shows the "Retrieval Amount" setting. If i have my "Auto Retrieval" set to every 15 minutes like yours, the phone won't allow me to specify the "Retrieval Amount" like in your setting. It keeps that setting to "All" and all headers in my real Gmail inbox are downloaded to my phone inbox. I can't specify the Retrieval Amount unless my Auto-Retrieval (which you talk about in step 3) is turned OFF. Meaning that now I must manually connect to my inbox whenever I want to check my mail.
The imap connection doesn't stay open unless the Auto Retrieval setting isn't set to at least 30 minutes or less.
Do you see what I mean now.
@ UberTechnophile. I'll give that a shot, but I know I've tried that before. When I go back to Enable I am welcome with same last screenshot. If I push Yes and go back into my Retrieval Settings it's automatically switched to All again. I'll dig into it again though. Thanks so much for the help.
No, no, we're still at cross-purposes. In theory, in an area of good coverage, IMAP will stay connected and auto-retrieve should definitely be disabled.
Things get more complicated when you dip into and out of coverage, causing the IMAP connection to be lost etc. Personally, I just manually connect up when needed - if I'm going to be checking again in the next half an hour or so, I just leave the connection 'open', to experience free push email, as per the article.
this is exactly my point Steve. 1) The email application doesn't automatically connect when the connection is lost. and now 2) auto retrieval isn't working (like every 15 mins like in your post) unless you want to download your entire inbox. it wasn't like this before.
It's still a problem Steve. Thanks for posting and trying to help.
@ Uber. still no luck. i it's downloading my entire inbox. nokia needs to fix this.
Yup having exactly the same problem. I only noticed when Messaging seemed slow, which probably was because it had just downloaded 6843 email messages :O
Glad I'm on an unlimited data plan lol.
Nokia, fix this PLEASE!
Do you have any idea how to keep "auto retrieval" enabled on N95 8GB? I tried different applications but they didn't work for long either.
Do you think auto retrieval works better on Samsung Omnia i900? I don't have much money, but I really need to get an e-mail system I can trust.
tubelius@gmail.com
i just bought a nokia 5800 and t happens exaclty the same. it really sucks.
Hi.
I recently update my N95-8GB to the latest firmware (V 32.2.001) and I'm facing now the same issue. The temporarily solution that I figured it out was to archive all my messages in Gmail, but I'm not happy with this solution. If somebody found a better workaround please comment.
So its not May 2010 and this issue still exists. I think its Nokias way of forcing you to use their Nokia Sync with their servers. Ill have to Archive messages in Gmail like stated above to not have 4000 mails in my inbox
