Does The Nokia N82 Replace Your Digital Camera?

California Sunset - Share on Ovi

I've been thinking about this for awhile now. For me the Nokia N82 has replaced my digital camera. Has it for you?

The only thing I'm missing is optical zoom. But then again I didn't even use it that much. I guess it just depends on what you use your photos for and what you take pictures of. Some people need a digital camera for huge resolutions and better focus options. Some like creating huge prints and framing them. The N82 wouldn't be the right solution.

Then there are normal users like me who just shoot pictures of when they go out to hang out with friends or family. I've even get some great pictures of nature and my workplace. How do I use these photos? Only for web. It's rare when I print them, and if I do they are 3x5's for a photo album. Everything else gets emailed, posted to a website, or stored on my computer for future use. Viewing these at the original size is also a rarity. So obviously the 5 megapixels take photos good enough to replace my digital camera.

Darla Mack recently wrote a small article that brings another point. She quoted an avid photographer's thoughts about cameraphones and the Nokia N82.

"The worst photo you’ll ever take is the one you don’t take because you didn’t have your camera with you."

Like her I also love that quote. Even avid photographers aren't going to take their camera with them absolutely everywhere. But the phone goes with you at all times. He posted comparison photos taken by the N82 and his $3,000 Canon 5d. Just looking at the two images in a very common size thats viewed on the web the N82 really holds it's own. It's not until you blow up these pictures large when you'll see the difference. And like I said before it's rare when the average user blows up their photos. Click here to check out his great article that makes you proud to be a N82 owner.

Having the option to instantly post the photos to the web is also another plus over a digital camera. You don't have to wait till you have free time at home to upload your photos.

Do you still carry around a digital camera? Or has the N82 replaced your camera like it has for me?

i take a lot more pictures since i got my n82 but i won't say that it 'replaced' my humble little digicam. i still count on my digicam for some nice pics simply because i'm more used to it and also it has more settings than n82. the one thing that the cell phone cams sorely lack is the optical zoom. may be...just may be if it had optical zoom, i would have used it a lot more.

It hasn't replaced my digital camera for me. Most of the recent digital cameras have one significant feature that the N82 doesn't have, that is IMAGE STABILIZER. Like Canon with its IS line-up series, Panasonic with its Lumix O.I.S series etc.

I'm still waiting for when the developers will finally begin to introduce the IS feature into the mobile phone cameras. Since the IS works with a gyroscope, I don't think it would be too hard to implement in mobile phones, since newer mobile phones like the N82 have accelerometers already.

When mobile phones finally have Image Stabilizers, then I'll think about ditching my trusty Canon Ixus 850 IS.

No, it's not there yet. It's quite a good camera to have around but it lacks many features of a digicam, Most notably optical zoom.

we are anxiously waiting for the N82 Titanium <-> Black comparison. you know that, don't you? :)

Well, the N82 has replaced my ordinary camera alltogether! I can live with all the shortcomings (zoom, stabilizer etc.) I never had a stabilzer in my cameras anyway! And if i don't want the phone I just go offline!

Definitely it replaced my digi cam, I cannot even remember when the last time I used it. My camera has 10x optical zoom, which I use like once a year and it is pretty big too.... Mobility and quality of N82 camera is just right for me. And I consider myself an average user when it comes to cameras. I would assume that N82 camera would be enough for around 70-80% of people.
Geotagging is also a very nice feature which you don't get in point-and-shot cameras. Now I wouldn't even buy a camera without gps.

PS great blog, I read it on regular. keep going!

My old Casio Z55 5Ьзч was replaced by Nokia N82 camera. And I think it works twice better.

It didn't replace my digital SLR, that's for sure, but when do I actually have that with me? I'm taking a lot more picture with my N82 now, and I probably won't take my SLR on the next vacation (always hated having to carry it around all day). But for studio sessions and pure photography trips, I can't imagine any phone ever replacing a good SLR.

N82 can’t be used for professional photography as there are better cameras for that purpose. But for everyday life N82 has become everyday camera. It rooks.

glad to see many of you share my thoughts. like i said the convenience of it is amazing and it even takes better pictures than many 6 megapixel standalone cameras!

On my honeymoon, I brought my camera as well as my N82. After using my digi-cam at the beginning of the holiday I remembered how slow & unwieldy it was compared with my phone. The phone was easy to have in my pocket, took great pictures from day to night and the images were good enough to include in our printed wedding album. I think that I will only be taking out my full on camera very occasionally, it is a few years old with 4MP but it does have a 10x optical zoom.

Actually...yes !! I bring my N82 with me every day and I shot everythni. It's smaller than a camera and you car use it as a phone...

When i show my pictures to my friens or family they don't believe me when I say it's from my mobile phone ^^.

The main feature that attracted me in N82 is its camera. Besides the phone, I also have a 12x optical superzoom that looked like a mini DSLR and a DSLR. Unfortunately, both of them aren't really pocket friendly. I had pondered to get a very compact digicam, but decided to go for a cameraphone instead as it is easier to 'smuggle' into some places heheh.

Having the phone to not look like a camera is actually a plus for me. People not familiar with N82 won't realize the quality underneath the lens cap :-) For example, security personnel at malls usually overlook people taking pictures with cameraphones, but will interfere with peeps taking pictures with a real digicam. Happens a lot here.

Unfortunately the N82 is not perfect as it isn't really a stealthy one. The annoying red warning light as well as the shutter can't be turned off (asian firmware). Apart from that, if they had included spot metering and the option to control the Xenon's flash power (often I find it overpowering), N82 would have been the king of cameraphones =)

Back to the original point, N82 won't replace my other cameras but it complements situations otherwise previously impossible to capture with my bulky DSLR. Pardon my long rambling =)
