How To Set Up Gmail On Your Nokia N82

There are a few ways to check your Gmail on your Nokia N82, I mentioned one way a few weeks ago. Lately I've been using the built-in email application on the N82, and I'm loving it once again. If you set up your Gmail using this method, it will keep your real Gmail inbox in your browser and your phone's inbox in sync. If you dig deep enough into the settings you can even set up your labels as folders. I just use my normal inbox on my N82, and deal with the Gmail labels in Firefox.

Here is how to set up your Gmail for your Nokia N82:

How To Setup Gmail On Your S60 Device:

  1. Enable IMAP in your Gmail account settings.
  2. Select 'Messaging' > 'Options' > 'Settings' > 'E-mail' > 'Mailboxes.'
  3. If you have never set up email on your phone before, select 'Yes' to define a new mailbox. If you already have other mailboxes, select 'Options' and then 'New mailbox.'
  4. Select 'Start' to begin the setup wizard.
  5. Select 'IMAP4' and then 'Next.'
  6. Enter your Gmail username (including '@gmail.com') as the email address and select 'Next.'
  7. Enter 'imap.gmail.com' as the incoming mail server and select 'Next.'
  8. Enter 'smtp.gmail.com' as the outgoing mail server and select 'Next.'
  9. Select the appropriate access point and then 'Next.'
  10. Enter a descriptive name for the email account mailbox name.
  11. Once your mailbox is set up, select it from the email mailbox settings screen.
  12. Select 'Connection settings' > 'Incoming e-mail.'
  13. Enter your Gmail username (including '@gmail.com') and password.
  14. Select 'SSL/TLS' for your security (ports) and define your port as '993.'
  15. Select 'Back.'
  16. Select 'Outgoing e-mail.'
  17. Enter your Gmail username (including '@gmail.com') and password.
  18. Select 'StartTLS' for your security (ports) and define your port as '587.'
  19. Select 'Back' and change any other settings according to your preferences.
Link to the official instructions.

Gmail's IMAP vs. POP
The reason why I use Gmail's IMAP service is because it keeps your mail in sync between both devices, unlike POP setup. If I read an email on my phone, it shows as "read" on both my computer and phone. Same goes for the other way around. Check it on my computer, and it shows as "read" on my phone as well. You can set it to check your mail at different intervals, mine is set to 2 hours, unless I'm expecting an important email.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. It can be tricky, you gotta follow the steps exactly and make sure you type everything right.

Works fine for me except for outgoing mail... just sits as 'queued'.

Double checked all the settings, no dice...

Gah, ignore me, i'm clearly having a dumb day.

Works fine :)

Hi Mark, encountered the "outgoing mail sitting in queue" problem as you. Tried numerous ways but unable to resolve. Could you share your solution please. Tx.

Y.Wei please make sure you have typed in everything perfectly right. Make sure you add @gmail.com at the end of the username. One little mispelling will ruin the settings.

Mark, Got it! instead of startTLS, selected SSL/TLS. Really silly mistake. Thanks so much!

Sorry, I meant Mike. Another silly mistake!!

Heh, yeah that's what I did :)

Glad it's working :)

Has anyone else tried setting up gmail labels as folders? I tried it tonight. Disaster. They set up apparently fine but messaging has been running at a crawl since even though it was only another 5MB of messages.

I wound up trying to delete the mailbox but that won't work. I'm now considering a hard reset... gaah

Hi! I've followed your tutoral (and it works fine), but still, there's something I'ld like to know: to receive the e-mail notifications you have to be connected to the mailbox?

I can't seem to understand this one, because if i turn the notifications on, i receive new e-mail in Gmail but i don't receive any notification on N82. I was hoping it would act kind of what happens with MMS: some phones receive a notification and then you download the full MMS.

Any clues on this one?

hello

wonder if anyone can help...im actually using N78 but its the exact same settings as above.

I had set up everything and was using IMAP successfully. Although i used to get a weird "mail server not found" followed by "incoming server not found. check mailbox settings" whenever i used any WLAN network. However I could use the same WLAN networks to browse the web. Anyway I was happy that i could retrieve my emails using my dataplan but due to IMAP i would incure expensive and uncessary downloads of emails I had already read on my computer browser.

I decided to move to POP. I enabled POP in my gmail a.c and went through the required settings e.g. (pop.gmail.com and port 995) but now i get error message as before for WLAN or data connection. I can use my WLAN and data connection to browse the web so nothign wrong with them. Yet the built-in email client gives me the "incoming server not found. check mailbox settings" error message. I deleted IMAP mailbox initially set up and retried my POP mailbox - no dice. I then deleted my POP mailbox and started again from scratch but from this point on any mailbox i setup (IMAP or POP) i always get the same error message. I am 100% sure all settings are accurate. I can also use my WLAN and data connections for web browsing/downloading games etc. any helP? TiA!
