Hi, this is Kaye from Malaysia. I just bought my N82 on Feb 2, 2008. It was great until I find today that the right selection key and the cancel (C) key start to creak when I pressed on them. This phone is less than a month and now it is starting to creak on me. This is pretty annoying on my part.

Do you think I could ask the dealer to rectify this problem for me, or even to the more extreme solution, to change the phone for me? What do you think is the problem behind the creaking sound?

Finally, I have downloaded some themes onto my phone and I find out that I could not delete them when I wanted to. Do you think there is another way of deleting the installed themes without having to reformat the whole thing?

Thanks.

You could reach me at kys1102@hotmail.com

Mike Macias said...

Hi Kaye,
I know that the creaking problem you speak of is a new problem arising with a lot of people's N82 after about a month of use. I haven't experienced it yet, luckily. Your phone should have a 1 year warranty on it, so I would contact Nokia or the dealer you got it from and have it replaced, as it seems to be a defect.

As for the unwanted themes, are they installed on the Phone or Memory Card. You should be able to go to Tools>Application Manager and see them there. Click Options>Remove to uninstall it. Somtimes if the theme is installed on the Memory Card, you might need to use another method. I always recommend installing all applications and themes on the Phone Memory.

Hopefully I helped you out. Leave your reply below

Hi, there, Mike,

Thanks for your reply. :)

I have been to the dealer and I was told that they might have to replace the key pad for me. Knowing that this happens to a lot of N82 phones, it actually did make me feel somewhat alright.

The themes can only be deleted only if I reformat my phone. So, there, I will have to be very careful in selecting the themes that I would like to have in my phone in the future.

Thanks for helping me out, Mike. Have a great day. :)

Hi Mike, I just got the N82 a couple of weeks ago and I'm having probs getting online and browsing. The only website that seems to open is msn.com. I am using my wireless connection at home. I don't know what the problem is. If you could be of any help, I'd really appreciate it!

Mike Macias said...

@ kaye,
I really hope the dealer replaces your whole phone, and pressures nokia to fix this problem. These things really need to be built better. About the themes, I still don't see why you can't delete them. I have no problem deleting mine.

@ masriya,
That's a really odd problem, especially since your using your wireless connection at home. Your able to access any website on your home computer right? What happens when you try to load another website? It just doesn't load at all? Do you get an error? Is your homes connection high speed or dial up? Is your phone branded to a carrier?

masriya said...

Hey Mike, thanks for the quick response!
I'm on my home computer as I type right now and I can access almost any website unless it's inappropriate because it's blocked by the provider. I live in the Middle East and we have ADSL here.
When I try to connect to yahoo.com for example, it says 0kB and it doesn't ever load. The connection error I typically get is "web connection timed out" or "no gateway reply."
For some reason, msn.com always loads but I cannot link up to hotmail.
I hope you can help me out, it's really frustrating!
Thanks again!

Hey Mike

I've wanted a N82 since its release, but now with the black version coming April 3rd, I'm planning on that. Do you think that the symbian Feature Pack will be the 2nd, newer version? Or at least downloadable for Feature Pack 1 phones? An input would be greatly appreciated.

Stupid question maybe, The default web browser on the N82.. I need to press the equivalent of the Enter button on a PC keyboard.. is there an equivalent on the N82 browser?

I need it for stuff like password entering but no clickable 'Send' button - where the enterkey on the PC would send the info after typing it in the box.

Many thanks indeed!

and i wanna know if i can use hspda, with rogers?
thanks

Mike Macias said...

no, the hspda 3g only works on European bands. i'm hoping they come out with a North America version, but it's start to look dim.

Anonymous said...

> @ anonymous
> that's a really good question, i'm not sure there is a way to do this. i haven't seen a website that doesn't

>have a "send" button. give me an example I'll see what I can find.

Hi Mike, If you have a facebook account for example (only one I can remember at the mo) If you was to update your status, you type in the box but there is no [OK] to click, (where as hitting enter on the PC keyboard would accept) clicking outside the box does not accept it..

The other one (www.bloomberg.com) top middle of page there is a 'Bloomberg Anywhere' clickable link. In this you enter username & password, but again there is no [OK] button so I can't get past this screen.

Good luck in finding away & Cheers for investigating!

Hi Mike,
I am a guy from germany and just got my N82 since yesterday. This is my first Symbian. Do you have an idea how i can get these emoticons in my messages? My girlfriend bombs me with them and all these dots and dashes are running me wild. Thanks and greetings to the californian sun.

Unknown said...

hey hows it going. congrats on your first symbian device. unfortunately, emoticons are not built into Nokia Nseries phones. you can try a 3rd party solution which you have to pay for, but there is a 2 day trial. i really can't believe this feature isn't built into these phones.
you can try installing this application
http://www.myasms.net/index.php

the california sun is shining today! it's about 77 degrees out here. hows the weather in germany? my friends tell me it's a beautiful place. and the beer is always flowing!

Hi mike,
this is also my very first time to change a phone from 3315 to n82 and my first symbian and the first smartphone...lol...everything first for me. i would like to ask how to set a ringtone specifically for a contact? is there any dsoftware needed to do this??? i found some software that can even set a video for a specific caller.

Mike Macias said...

congrats on your first s60 phone. it's a good first. how are you liking it so far?

to assign a ringtone to a contact, you don't need anymore software.

How to assign ringtones to contacts on N82 -
1. go into contacts. select the caller.

2. push options, go down till you see ringtone. then select your tone. you should be able to choose any song or sound on your whole phone/memory card.

a video assigned to a caller should also be available without 3rd party software. look under your options for that as well.

Hi, I have got a problem with the N82. I can fully utilize my wireless network, no problem. I only can't access any printer (wireless) The n82 doesn't detect any...My E51 hasn't got any problems because there you can just assign all the details your self. Any idea how tackle this?
Thanks!

Anonymous said...

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your help! I´ll try the solution and will have a look for some other software - Symbian is really great. Yes, Germany is a beautiful place to live, I like it ...but the damn cold weather, actually 43 degrees and stormy. Here are some brands of beer you should try: Krombacher, Warsteiner and Veltins. Have a nice time - I will dive now into my N82!

Hello,
I had a very simple question about the N82. First of all great phone, worth every penny that i spent on it.

However, i noticed that on the new themes that was posted on the blog, there were option of viewing notes on the active stand by screen. I searched every where online, and on my phone but could not figure out how to do that.

If you could help me customize the active standby screen, that would be great.

I'm not talking about the applications, but rather the plugins like: WIFI, Calender, Search Content

Thank you

Mike Macias said...

Burakfb,

there are not many options for the active stanby screen. there aren't any plugins that you can install on the standby screen. if you have active stanby on, it will display all the shortcut apps you choose, the wifi options, search, and calendar entries. those notes you see in those theme screenshots are not in fact notes, they are "memos" that you can make in the calendar application. All meetings, to-do notes, and memos from the calendar will appear on the standby screen.

to turn all this off you go into the settings and turn off active standby.

did this help you out? like i said, there are not many options with active standby plugins.

burakfb said...

mike thanks for the help
greatly appreciate it, i guess the plugin option exists on the e series phones rather the n series, but as long as i see tasks and to-do information, i'm good

thanks again

are you having any problems connecting to other hotspots? is your phone seeing the router at all? what brand is your router?

to the person w/ the wireless printer problem,

i can't help you i don't have any experience with a wireless printer. maybe you should head over to the everything n82 forums, they might be able to help.

Hey Mike, so there any way that when you go into gallery - photo's and video's that instead of seeing all the stuff you can see the albums you have. Instead of having to go into options and show albums.

I want to see the albums automatically, when i enter the gallery.

i contacted nokia care nearby.. they have no idea about the GPS stuff.. all they said is we will try flashing the mobile.

Google map works just fine, but i dont have navigation facility in google and also voice navigation, and im not sure we have those options in google.

Hello Mike,

I'm Martin and I have had my N82 for a month or 2, and I love it!! My question is, on the themes that have redeisgned icons, why is it that the Music icon in the main menu never changes? I kind of ruins the look of themes, especially ones like "Flawed", all nice white icons then the standard beige folder for Music!
Any ideas?
Cheers! :)

Mike Macias said...

wow akaash thats a terrible problem. i have no idea what's going on with that, you might want to take your question over to the S60 forums over at www.howardforums.com, as i've never seen that before.

to martin,
i don't know why the music icon is never redesigned. I've never seen this icon except on the n82. it's not present on the n95, at least the one i had. maybe the developer of the themes aren't using a nokia n82 so haven't noticed it. i agree it throws off the menu. i don't know any workaround. are you liking that theme? i think it looks great on the n82

Hello Mike

I use Google Calendar alot. I can view it on my N82 by surfing to googles homepage and that works kind of ok. BUT! I want to be able to add meetings etc. from my phone and have it sync perfectly with Google Calendar. How can I do this in the best way?
Best regards,
Martin

Mike Macias said...

@ anonymous about the standby screen,
this is one of the downfalls of S60. you can't remove any of those shortcuts unless you disable active standby competely. this will also remove the six shortcut applications, but you can then customize the d-pad for shortcuts. i've complained to nokia about this many times.

@ the duck,
did you install them on your memory card or phone memory. i hope that you installed them on your phone memory, i've recommended it multiple times here at the blog. there is a way to get them off your memory card, but it's a pain in the ass. i'll find the tutorial on a friends blog and post about it today.

@ kashmir,
yes a hard reset will do the trick, but i'm not sure if you'll use your 3 month license for nokia maps. i hope you don't. good luck.

@ martin. there is an application i believe called calsync. you can try and search for it. it's brand new and has a few bugs. i'm gonna play with it more today and make an article about it hopefully by tonight. let us know if you find it.

there is also an application for any phones called gcalsync. it's not meant specifically for the n82, but might help do the trick. it's also a little buggy. i personally wouldn't recommend it, but you can give it a try. www.gcalsync.com

hope that helped, and lookout for an article about this issue soon.

Tips/features

I just tried remote controlling my N82 with a wiimote :-) nGage and all.

Thanks to: http://mobi-pad.com/

This would be very handy combined with a decent presentation viewer. I just tried the builtin quickofficeI just tried th ppt viewer, but was very disappointed. A test ppt from openoffice impress, was messed up. There was no option for automatically scaled fullscreen.
Does anyone have any experince with presentation formats, eg. pdf, ppt, odp?

Hi Mike,

2 newbie Qs:

1.How do I show the digital clock and the full date on my main screen?
I am using the network operator time? On analog it shows the day.

2. On the call log, it does not show from what number a person called from if its in my address book and the icon is always the same, how do u see from which number they called (office,home,cell...)?

Thanks, Oli

Anonymous said...

more info to previous Q1:

my digital clock shows the time and in the "middle" AT&T and underneath my profile name.

I have seen sceenshots of the N82 screen where it shows the date instead of the profile name, but where do I set that?

Anonymous said...

Hello Mike!

First and foremost, congratulations for the great job you are doing to the N82 users community, you really have the patient to tamper with anything concerning the N82 and help the users that visit your website, that is admirable.

My question is simple: I bought the N82 from the States but I live in Europe. The charger is in the american format, and I can buy an AC-4, which is compatible with the N82, but I don't know if the AC-4 is slower than the AC-5, or if it is just about the size.

Have you tried these two chargers and/or do you know if the speed of charge is the same in both cases or not?

Thank you in advance and keep doing like until know, you are an excellent person and are doing a great job!

Happy Easter.

Mike Macias said...

@thomas. thats awesome you go your wiimote to control your phone. insane what these things can do. sorry i don't have any experience with office programs.

@ oli and anonymous about the date. you control analog or digital in the clock application. if you want the date to be shown, you must have your phone set to the "general" profile. any others it will show the profile name instead. no way around it. as for the call log, it's a bug in symbian s60 that they've had for awhile and just haven't fixed it. its on all s60 phones.

@ claudio,
happy easter to you pal. thanks for the kind words about this site. glad you enjoy it. about the chargers, i have no idea. i live in the states and never been to europe. sorry i can't help you there. you might want to ask someone at www.everythingn82.com

Hi all. When I turn on my N82 it tries immediately to connect to internet and then it keeps trying all the time. Does anyone know if there is an application that can help me detect which program is trying to access internet?

When I use the task manager it has two apps: "Stand by" and "Phone", but after some time apparently "Phone" disappears but it seems to me that the icon is behind the "Stand by" icon.

Another question: Do you know if there is any app that can let me program my N82 to turn on and off at established times of the day?

Thanks so much!!.

Mike Macias said...

gregorio,
for your internet problem what might be happening is your email. do you have automatic retrieval set up for your email. if so everytime you turn on your phone it will check it. to end the connection hold down the end key for 3 seconds.

no idea if there is an app that turns your phone on and off automatically but that would be cool. sorry.

Hello Mike, greetings from Greece!
I just bought my N82 and when i turned it on, (i was too anxious to wait!!!) without the sim card inserted, it didn't ask for a sim card. It just got lighted up.Strange,no???
I think, also, that the cover of the sim card is really touchy and sensitive. Thanks and sorry for being rash...

I was just looking at the n82 user guide on nokia's website (http://www.nokiausa.com/A4781041) and it talks about adding location information to images. THIS EXPLAINS GEOTAGGING FOR THE N82 IN DETAIL. Check it out.

Anonymous said...

First, thanks for answering these questions.

I currently have an old Nokia 6682 phone and am thinking of upgrading to a N95 8GB or Nokia N82.

1. Nokia USA tells me that the screen rotation on the N82 will not work browsing the internet, although, I've seen demos on the internet showing this. Nokia did confirm that the N95 has screen rotation

Should I believe what I see or listen to the reps at Nokia?

2. I have AT and T.... is there truly a US phone version now and will it work seamlessly with my AT and T service if I pop my sim card in.

3. Will I notice a significant upgrade in phone usability if I go to the N82 or N95 and is it worth the money?

4. Will my portable SU-8W bluetooth keyboard that Nokia sells, work with the N82 or N95.

Mike Macias said...

@ kherlen
i'm not sure where the phone will be made. my n82 is working great. the brightness is also weaker than then n95's. this can and hopefully will be fixed with a firmware update.

@ anonymous
the n82's auto screen rotation works great with the web browser. in fact it works in every application except ngage and the homescreen.

any n82 version will work seemlessly with american at&t. thats what i am using and i have the european version. just pop in your sim and everything will be set up. you will love upgrading the to this phone and it is very much so worth the money. do you take lots of pictures. if you do than this phone is great, if not then you'll find yourself suddenly taking lots of pictures.

yes that bluetooth keyboard will work just install the drivers for the nokia n73. it will work perfectly.

hope i answered you questions correctly and keep them coming

Anonymous said...

Mike,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Couple of more questions on the N82:

I see it takes a micro sd card... is there a limit of 2GB? Not clear on Nokia's web site

Also, did I read correctly that the N82 does not have a speakerphone?

If you had to choose between the N95-3, N82 or N81, which phone would you choose? I don't like problems with my phones and see that a lot of people have posted them on your site. A friend of mine has the N76 phone and had nothing but trouble from day one.

Finally, do you have a comment on the E-90?

Mike Macias said...

no the limit is 32gb, but right now nobody has made one bigger than 8gb. i use a 4gb in mine.

out of those three i would choose the nokia n82. i love the form factor, its solid with no moving parts. the camera software is faster and the xenon flash is the best. i've never used a e90. the n82 does in fact have a crystal clear speakerphone.

Anonymous said...

Mike,

Thanks for the information.

The only reason I ask about the memory on the N82 is that it only has 100 MB, internally and that initially concerned me compared to the N95's - 8 GB; however, I don't think you can add memory to that phone?

So, if I understand you correctly, the largest memory card you could technically put in an N82 is a 32 GB SD card, but, the largest one currently made is an 8GB and I imagine that a 4 GB would be fine for me to start off with. If I intend to use this as a secondary camera to my 8.1 megapixel Panasonic, I wanted to make sure that I had enough memory to store the pictures. Just how much control do you have with that camera? I don't think it would be a match for my Panasonic, but, maybe I'm wrong.

How easy is it to transfer and download pictures from the camera do the desktop... just use PC suite, etc. Or I suppose, I can remove the memory card and put in my card reader?

Yes, I agree with you that the lack of moving parts and the Xenon flash and the automatic screen rotation are all very appealing features of the N82.

I've been pretty well served by my Nokia 6682 phone except that I cannot send e-mail attachments using Quick Office with my series 60, 2nd edition version and this is frustrating. I hope to be able do that with the upgraded version.

Also, thanks for clarifying the speakerphone issue.. if you go to Nokia's USA web site and compare phones, the N82's listing for a "yes" under speaker phone is conspicuously absent.

Have you had a good experience with the camera features?

By the way, I've had such a good experience with Nokia and the Symbian platform, that I dismissed the idea of getting an iphone... is that a mistake?

The iphone has some serious limitations in my opinion although I must admit the Safari browser on that phone seems to outshine all others. Would you agree with that?

your right the iphone does have some serious limitations and i wouldn't recommend if you enjoy taking "on the spot" when you don't have your panasonic. look at the post i made today about photo sharing. the pictures in the slideshow came out great. you can click one to view them on the ovi site.

there are many ways to transfer the images to your desktop. i'll list them for you...

1. card reader. pop out your microsd card and use a card reader. this is the fastest way.

2. pc suite. you can use the data cable that comes with your phone and nokia pc suite will load them up for you automatically into folders labeled by date. if you want you can make it erase the photos on your phone once they are on your computer to ensure plenty of space on your memory card. you can also use this method over bluetooth and set it up to automatically start checking for new images on your phone and transfer them over bluetooth when you get home. all you have to do is walk in the door and process will start as long as your and your computers bluetooth is on and pc suite is running in the background. you can eat dinner and watch tv and not even notice its hapening.

3. mass storage mode. if you have 100's of pictures and dont have a card reader you can use mass storage mode over the data cable and its faster than pc suite.

4. send your photos to flickr or ovi.com and they are stored there.

a 4gb card is perfect for you. i have 2 gigs of music one of video and one of pictures. the 8gbs you can find on ebay now for around $60 not bad huh?

the camera has lots of settings to play with. iso, timer, sequence mode, exposure compensation, white balance, color tone and a bunch of presets that are awesome.

if your in the market for a camera phone, the n82 is the best. faster and better pictures than the n95. the n82 will have location tagging via gps built into the phone so the coordinates are marked on the jpeg data. you can than easily upload the pictures to a map like i did in the post today that i made.

the n82's browser is made with the same safari coding and also can load just about any website. with the next firmware update you will have flash enabled in the browser. youtube, google video, espn.com videos, everything with flash will work on the browser.

Hi. I'm thinking of making the jump from WM to Symbian specifically for the N82's camera. Just have one question. I live and die by the calendar sync with Outlook. WM is a lot of things but the good thing is the calendar works great. My friend had a SE K790 and couldn't get the calendar to sync recurring meetings correctly. Specifically, if you changed one instance of a recurring meeting (not the whole series) the calendar on the phone wouldn't update that one meeting. Does the N82 have problems with syncing recurring meetings? That would be a deal breaker for me. Thanks.

Mike Macias said...

paul, i don't have much experience with syncing outlook and the n82. you might want to visit Howard Forums and ask this question. it's a great community over there. i came from windows mobile as well and i've never looked back. s60 has so many features and 3rd party options. and the n82's camera has replaced my digital camera for everyday snapshots.

Hi Mike,
I'm a longtime S60 user-I switched to an N82 from an N73, and the biggest thing I miss from my old phone is the dictionary key. Earlier it was very easy to multi-select a bunch of items (SMSes, emails, photos, contacts etc) and do something with them(delete or move or whatever).

Is there any way to select multiple items or have I got to painstakingly choose options-mark items-mark for each item?

Mike Macias said...

@ anonymous... i have no idea why you can't text.

@ rex... your solution is the # key.

Hi Mike

I've got a little thing that is annoying me with my N82, and my wife has the same issue with her N81. I got my N82 a few weeks ago on the O2 network, and all is brilliant, except for the function of one button. The selection/shortcut button above the cancel key starts up the internet, and I keep accidently pressing it, which connects me to the internet. Occasionally I don’t realise I have done it and can be connected for a while, which could end up costing me valuable £'s. Is there anyway to change the function of this key? I have looked around on the net, in the manual, and just by playing around with the phone, but can’t see a way to change it. You’re help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Rex said...

Hi kungfunun,
You can customize the shortcut keys displayed. Open the option menu, then go to Tools-Settings-General-Personalization-
Standby Mode. Here you can choose either Active Standby (where there are 6 shortcuts displayed in standby mode) or turn it off, to look like older s60 phones. There's a shortcuts menu here where you can change the action assigned to the 2 soft keys.

Anonymous said...

I sync my N82 with a mac but on the standby screen instead of seeing todays items from the calendar, I get tomorrows, is there anything I can do to change this so I see todays and maybe tomorrows too?

Mike Macias said...

@ anonymous about the calendar...
not sure if you can do anything. you just gotta play with the settings on your own.

@ ethan...
there is no python application icon to click on. once its installed in just there. its just a programming language that allows other applications made in the python language like shakelock to run.

@ anonymous about o2. i heard about that too. i guess they said the sales of the n82 weren't good enough. go figure. maybe if you bug them enough they'll bring it back. give them a ring.

@ pallu... give me a link to the files. make sure the version of the file is for s60 3rd edition, not 2nd or 1st. those files won't work.

Hi Mike

I recently purchased a n82 and I am overall very satisfied. Yet a problem has occured now, which can't seem to fix.

When attempting to open the music player, the phone never get any further than the opening screen. It will just attempt to load for hours.

So my question, what could have brought this os and how do I fix it? Should I attempt a hard reset?

I hope you'll be able to help me

Mike Macias said...

hi. sounds like you have a problem with the firmware. since there is brand new firmware available for the nokia n82, check the last few posts on this blog and see if you can install it. you'll get a boatload of new features and it should also fix your problem. if you would not like to upgrade, then it sounds like you need to perform a hard reset. good luck and check back with your results.

Hi. Is it true that the n82 has navi wheel hardware but nokia have disabled this. I know that originally the phone should have had one and nokia released videos showing it. Is it possible that it could be enabled with a software update. Has anyone taken apart an n82 and spotted the hardware.

Anonymous said...

Hello, i would like to know if there is any application, or any way to have a software that lets you read(with voice) the messages, for the NOKIA N82, like for example the 6110,6120classic etc.
thank you for your help.-

Anonymous said...

my software updater cannot detect The latest firmware update, it only has the version 11.0.117 update available and says my software is up to date. any solutions to this? i went to the http://www.everythingn82.com/ forum as well and it says the latest firmware update's still 11.0.117. maybe that forum's abandoned. -nick from malaysia

Mike Macias said...

@ everyone thats not getting their software updater to show the latest version: first make sure you have the latest version of nokia software updater. if you do then just wait and it will come to your region eventually over the next few days. nokia doesn't always release the updates all at once.

@ the naviwheel question. i think the protype models originally had the naviwheel, but nokia pulled it. i strongly don't believe that the n82 has the hardware for it. i might be wrong though. i agree it would be awesome to have especially scrolling through the music player.

@ the voice messages question. there is an application that does this but i can't think of it off the top of my head. i'll post an article about it as soon as i can.

Hi Mike,
I have N82 from past three months. And the problem is regarding the new firmware. After installing that, I have observed that the phone has become sluggish. E.g. when I try to open the 'Messaging' from the 'desktop' i.e. stand by(I didnt know any other name to refer to that. Hope its appropriate), the messaging module takes time to load and loads in a patchy way, in the sense, its like a jig saw puzzle being solved in 1 second...it doesnt appear like complete.
With the old firmware both, the phone being sluggish and things loading in a patchy way, were not the case.
So any idea why? And do you think installing the new firmware again is advised?

Hi Mike,
Well, the phone eventually blacked out, as soon as I got one message. So invariably I had to reinstall the firmware.
But the sad part is that it didn't improve anything. Still the phone is sluggish.
So is there any way I can revert it back to the old firmware?

And btw, can you tell me where I can see the geo-tagging option? I still cannot find it in any of the menus!

Hi I'm from Kuwait.I bought the N82 in mid of March 2008..The faceplate of the phone's screen had a slight tilt on the right side...I observed that the bottom portion of the right part of faceplate was not perfectly attached to the body of the phone .there was a tiny gap in between the faceplate and the phone base.at the bottom which seemed like a tilt..but this was unnoticeable...so I ignored it...but now my right soft key has started creaking..even the call hang up (Red) Key....
Is this a manufacturing defect?? The creaking isnt very annoying, but I fear whether it will affect the overall life of the keypad..has anyone else experienced such problems?? Should I contact my dealer?? Is this a manufacturing defect?? Can I ask for a replacement instead of getting it repaired as I'm under warranty period..
Please note that my phone functions properly..including the keypad..its just the creaking..thats all..
And my music player crashes sometimes in the middle of playback sometimes...I assume this is a firmware issue.(v10.0.046)..So am I liable to get a replacement?

A couple of questions:

1) all of my contact information is in outlook. when I sync my N73, all of the contact pics in outlook get synced, but when I sync my N82, the pics don't show up in my contact list. How do I get the photos in outlook to transfer over to my N82 in the same manner the N73 does it? (as an engineer I have 1400 contacts which has a lot of details)

2) it seems that the contact in outlook, if, say, have multiple emails or phone numbers in outlook, SOMETIMES, some details are missing on my N82. Any thoughts on setting up the labels so that this doesn't happen?

3) it seems that once I get a certain number of songs on my 8gb microSD card, the set personal ringtone no longer works. How do I fix this?

Thanks!

@ dj caluma... not sure how to transfer over the contacts pictures. you might have to re-assign them all.

not sure about the outlook contacts, i don't have/use outlook.

i'm not sure why your ringtone is doing this. i know that if you remove the song, then put it back, it will probably reset your ringtone.

@ theme question. make sure the theme you are using is for s60 3rd edition.

@ miko. the sound is excellent. over headphones including bluetooth i can't notice a difference. plugging into your car speakers you might notice a loss of bass, but not much.

@ chris. sounds like your memory card might be corrupting the phone. try reformatting the memory card and seeing if you still get the error.

good luck.

are you saving your apps and messages on your phone memory? you should be. if not, it will slow your phone down.

let me know what happens after your hard reset and don't forget you will have to reinstall everything. backup your contacts, messages, calendar entries, etc.

Mike Macias said...

hi harry. glad to hear you got the n82. hopefully my answers will help.
first off. make sure you have the latest firmware. plug your phone into your computer and launch nokia pc suite. click on software updater and update if necessary.

1. make sure you have the latest version of share online, it should be 3.0. you might have to reinstall the application.

2. you have to make sure every single setting is exactly right. when being asked for username it must be yourusername@gmail.com

3. that service should be available in india since its streaming straight from the web. maybe your country has blocked it but i don't think so. make sure you go into the settings and set up your access points.

4. your phone should rarely restart. if you already have the latest firmware you might want to perform a hard reset to clear everything off your phone and start again from the original factory settings.

I just bought nokia N82 black from USA but I see that s made by nokia
is that means that is not an original nokia ?is it made in finland

Unknown said...

hi. made by nokia means it was made by nokia, just not in finland. nokia has a few plants in other countries. some people think made in finland phones are the best but i've seen many complain about those phones. i believe the "made in finland is better" is just a myth.

does your phone work good? does it feel solid? if it does, sit back and enjoy your new phone.

Anonymous said...

hi mike,
regarding this 'made in nokia...' stuff, i received this email purporting that the 7th and 8th digits of the imei number of the phone determines where the unit was manufactured. to quote...

"IF the digit number Seven & Eight is 02 or 20 that mean it was Assembly on Emirates which is very Bad quality :(

IF the digit number Seven & Eight is 08 or 80 that mean it s manufactured in Germany which is not bad

IF the digit number Seven & Eight is 01 or 10 that mean its manufactured in Finland which is Good

IF the digit number Seven & Eight is 00 that mean it was manufactured in original factory which is the best Mobile Quality

IF the digit number Seven & Eight is 13 that mean it was Assembly on Azerbaijan which is very Bad quality and very dangerous for health!!!" (end quote)

is there any truth to this??? thanks.

hi miko. i have never heard of anything like that. who did the email come from?

mike i 'm from malaysia. until now i stil cant update my firmware to v20, so is there any problem for us who live in asian country to update our phone firmware ?

Hi mike, im from venezuela, and i've noticed several errors or maybe they are just things that need to be improvved in future firmwares and i would like to know how can i help with this...because i really find some of this errors really anoying.... another thing i would like to know is why if i have the newest firmware 20.0.062 i cant watch videos on youtube...also i have a friend that have a sonyericsson and he can use a .swf file as wallpaper, this is really great becuase hi has a rotatin apple logo, that functions with the accelerometer and when you move the phone tha apple rotates in that direction....is this possible on n82?

Mike Macias said...

hi lily. i haven't heard of people from asian countries having this problem. make sure you have the latest version of nokia software updater.

kenneth... describe the errors in detail here to see if anyone else has these same errors. the more you talk about them on websites like this and other nokia website the more nokia will see the problems.

you should be able to watch youtube videos in the browser. make sure you have flash enabled in your settings, and if you love youtube download the Mobitubia application.

i'm not sure about flash wallpapers i've never tried it. if you find a solution let us know, and in the meantime I'll look for a solution.

good luck. please report back.

@ hello see me
N72 is a Series60 2nd Edition FP3 device. whereas N82 is a S60 3rd Edition FP1 device....
N82 also uses .sis and .sisx files... just try searching for apps which can be installed on S60 3rd Edition phones... u will find plenty...

Unknown said...

in the errors i found...for example when you open up an sms and you go into the message details to see the time it arrived, the time is always wrong.....another thing is when you open the video centre and you put the phone in landscape mode the accelerometer does not worl in the video centre......a thing i find very anoying is that you can not set a background picture at the whole size of the screen, there is some sort of frame that dont let you do that...it would be very nice to be able to use the whole screen.......if i find some other things i'll let you know...it would be very helpful if you fin some solutions tell me please!! hahaha...and i also was looking at the software of the new n78, and there are some features that are very good lookin for exameple the way you the images are displayed and the taskmanager, can I update this things to my n82?? and also an Fm transmitter would be great on n82!!!

Unknown said...

forgot to mention that i still cant watch videos directly from youtube....and i have downloaded the mobitubia...but the deal is to use ypure phone as it comes not with those extra apps....like the iphone :S

Hey. I just got my new N82 black from HK (Great phone, Great looks) and when i trun it on i get a note saying "Installing" with a some sort of a loading bar and after a while it just disappears without any note or warnings or anything. Any ideas on how could i know what it's trying to install or how can i disable it?

Unknown said...

@ kenneth. i'll try my best to answer your questions. make sure your phone has the latest firmware.

1. i don't know why your sms is showing the wrong time. mine is right on.
2. your right the video centre doesn't rotate automatically its pretty lame. but i never use video center.
3. another annoying problem. i'll write up a tutorial showing you a simple way to do this. you have to do it from your pc.
4. no you can't update to the n78 firmware.
5. you can watch youtube from your browser if you have the latest firmware. something the iphone can't do. the great thing about the n82 is it CAN have extra apps, so your not stuck with the crappy built in one. mobitubia blows the iphone's youtube application out of the water. people love nseries phones because you can install "extra apps".

@ ameer. do a hard reset of your phone. that will solve the problem. make sure you back up everything.

Unknown said...

well mike, thanks for those tips....yeah i still dont know what to do with the time of the sms...and my firmware is the latest i hae de 20.0.062...and youtube doesnt work....there must be soething wrong with my n82....and yes the extra apps are great!!! although there are some interesting apps i would like to have but i cant find themmmmfor examepl the panoman.... :(

I just got a n82, my carrier is att. I can recieve text msgs, send and recieve multimedia msgs, place and recieve calls and browse the net using wi fi and my carriers connection. The only thing i haven't been able to do is send text msgs. I've called att and nokia support, but neither had any idea how to fix this. Nokia even sent settings to my phone, but i still had the problem. Can anyone give me clues on how to resolve this issue?

Hi There! I got my N82 in april, And I Love it! Except for 1 or 2 things...

1. It seems that when there's more or less 400MB free on my memory card the phone's operations and menu is very very slow, almost freezing....? And if I remove or format the memory card its fast again? What can be the reason for this?

2. And sometimes the phone just restarts itself...the screen turns white and then it reboots and work normal again?

I don't think this is normal?!

Unknown said...

@ Joe-pr. Have you figured out your problem yet. I have no idea what can be going wrong. normally you should just have to put in the SIM and everything should work fine.

@ Dewhat.
1) are you installing applications and themes on the memory card? if so, you shouldn't be. keep them on the phone memory. all of theme. same goes for saving all messages to the phone memory. keep the memory card for just media like mp3s, videos, photos, etc.

2) sounds like there is a problem in your firmware. you should format your memory card and re-install the firmware or do a hard reset by searching for "hard reset" in the search part of this blog. make sure you have the latest firmware.

Hi Mike,

Stanley from Malaysia here. I emailed you before regarding the Music refresh issues, after plugin in 8GB card with more than 500 songs inside. The phone keep on in refreshing stat. Even I leave it for overnight it still refreshing on the next day. Can you suggest any solution on this? Or can you escalate to Nokia? Thank you so much.

Hi Mike!

From first use I installed all my apps and themes etc on the phone memory, and my photo's music etc on the mem card. I formatted the memory card and installed the latest firmware( mine was V10), and now v20.0.062 So I'll see what it does now...

Thank you mike!

Hi Mike,
I have had quite a few problems with my n82 phone recently.

First of all, my memory card (2gb- came with the phone)sometimes does not pick up the files and therefore says that my music player and image folder are empty. If and when it does pick up the files, i am not able to select any of my music files as message tones/caller assigned ringtones. I have tried a hard-reset which has not solved the problem.
(I have no apps/themes on mem card)

Also, lifeblog 'encounters a problem' when copying items to and from my phone, even though both lifeblog and pc suite show that my n82 is connected. I would like to sync/copy my files from the memory card to Lifeblog before formatting so as to not lose my recent images.

I have not been able to update the firmware- i currently have v10.0.046. My phone is generally running quite slow at the moment and i am not sure why?!

If you could help in anyway i would greatly appreciate it. Thankyou

Mike Macias said...

@ Alice... are you refreshing your music library after you add songs?

i know nothing about lifeblog so i can't help you there. not sure why your phone is running slow. i've found that lifeblog can slowdown your phone which is why i don't use it anymore. i highly recommend to update your firmware.

@ Stanley... are you still having this problem. what kind of memory card do you have.

hi mike! great blog! been hooked to it since i got my n82 about a month ago.

i just bought my sandisk 8gb micro sdhc today and was wondering if there are any things i need to check before changing cards.

quick questions...

- how do i format my new 8gb card for use on my n82? (i noticed nokia has a way of making folders)

- if i've got apps on my current 2gb and copy them to the 8gb, will they still work or do i have to do a reinstall?

what other things should i keep in mind for a seamless switch to my 8gb?

thanks in advance and love your blog!

Mike Macias said...

Hi Guys.

@ Will.. that's a common problem with s60 phones on T-mobile. do you have T-mobile? try removing your SIM. If that doesn't work go to www.howardforums.com and check the Nokia S60 section. Do a search for your problem and you will see a discussion about it.

@ Kenneth... as of right now the answer is no. Feature Pack 2 will make it's first appearance on the upcoming Nokia N78.

@ Abdelghani... I'm not sure how to check if it's an original phone but I'm pretty sure it is. Do you have any problems with it? To add the french language you may have to flash the phone to a European product code. I've never done this before but I'll look for a tutorial on how to do this.

@ Morse313.. glad you enjoy the blog. Congrats on your new 8gig. You shouldn't have to do anything to your new card. Just pop it in and go. If you want you can go to Tools > Utilities > Memory and reformat the card there. I highly recommend that you don't install apps on the memory card. They run faster and the phone will run faster if the apps and messages are all on the phone memory. Keep the memory card for media only. You can't just copy over your old apps from your memory card you must reinstall them. Start fresh with your new card. When transferring media to it it's best to use a card reader. Your transfers will be much faster.

Hi Mike,

Im from Singapore...I bought my N82 in Feb 2008...Until now its still giving me this problem...hope you can help...whenever i type a text message or save a contact (something that requires typing of words) the "highlighting" (usually what will happen when the # key is held on and moving along the direction...) will occur...at the same time...both the left and right soft keys function will disappear...meaning i can only move up/down/left/right, sometimes highlighting the whole thing etc etc...(usually this happens when i go into "symbol" screen to choose 2 or more symbols or when i use predictive text and using # key to change to capital letters or numbers...) its quite irritating...I wanted to bring it to a Nokia Care Centre to have it diagnosed...but they told me i have to wait for a few days to check whether theres any problem...which to me is a problem cos i dont have a replacement phone to use...do u have any idea why this is happening??

PS* My nokia map is having problem too...whenever i press the # (zoom out) key...it will zoom ALL THE WAY out...unless halfway i press the * (zoom in) key...then it will stop...Has this gotta do with the # key?? cos somehow both the problem is connected to the # key...

Thanks in advamce bro... =)

hey jeffrey it sounds like your keypad is defective and your bottom keys are being pushed. your only solution is to take it in to Nokia Care and have them fix it. Too bad you don't have a backup phone because I believe this is your only solution.

Good luck and let me know how it goes.

hi mike,

Im chris, just got my N82 for about a week now. Jus 1 or 2things that i find annoying-

I cant remove themes iv installed, if i check in app man all i see is : software installation, online certificate check, default web address.

Also- i try installing symbian apps or games- sometimes it just says ''sis not supported''
I cant even get another file explorer installed on it.

I also find that the brightness of the screen is set 2maximum but stil seems a bit dull-it does go higher at times, for example when running an application i have-the screen goes really bright, just wish it could stay that way. Or even when switching on the phone, it goes bright for about 8secs then dull again. Quiet disappointing!

Would appreciate any help or info u could provide.
If you can- contact me on chris777@vodamail.co.za

Hey man
Nice to see someone offering help here coz i am on the verge of insanity , just got myself the silver n82 and restored messages , contacts from my old phone , the problem is all messages'senders are displayed as numbers not the names of the contacts , i tried so hard , i added the country code before the contact name and removed it and tried to add detail from the message to the contact itself , no use , ain't no way i could just define or verify the sender so it could display the name?? or a way to fix that via the nokia pc suite.

Unknown said...

@ Chris... Your themes should show in the Application Manager as long as you installed them on the phone memory (i've recommended this many times). If you installed them on the memory card its a bitch to get them off and also this method causes the phone to run slower.

About the games, that means you probably are trying to install "2nd Edition" Apps, you gotta look for the S60 3rd Edition applications.

About the screen brightness, check out this post. please leave a comment their about your problem. the more people the better. we gotta get nokia to notice.
----------------------------

@ Ken... for windowson live I have no idea. I don't use the application and never have. you might want to consult windows and look for a help section. maybe 4mb is their limit from a mobile.

About the youtube videos. go into your browser settings and make sure flash is enabled. What is happening when you try to view the videos? what you should really use for youtube is an application called "Mobitubia". I highly recommend it. Search for that keyword here at the blog.
------------------------------

@ last comment. please leave your name in the future it's easier for me. I've never had a problem switching over contacts. What was your old phone? When you go into Contacts do they show up like normal? What happens when you receive new messages from those senders? Do they show the contact name or number? You can use PC Suite to mess with the contacts, just click the Contacts button and see if you have any problems there. Reset your phone as well. I have a feeling older texts didn't transfer right, but new texts will show all the info. Please check back and let me know.

Thanks for the quick response mike,

iv actually found a way to get the themes off the Mem Card - it is quiet a job to do though.

you've got to use a PC (PC Suite Software)- when browsing to mem card the Pc allows you to view the Hidden folders. in the hidden folder called "Private" you can just check in there & delete the themes you dont want, i dont rememeber the exact folder cos its a number but il post it tomorow. leaving work now.

ill look out for the S60 3rd Edition applications.

Any web sites for S60 3rd Edition Games?

Thanks
Chris

hi mike,
sometimes i wonder if the s60 in n82 have AI capability or not. cause most of the time when i play musics in shuffle i'll jump off the song genre that i wouldn't want to listen at that moment. well, most of my songs don't even have specific genre. after i jump off a few the next few will have almost the same genre that i listen to. lol. seems like the music player can understand the emotion of the song and play accordingly. this may seem rediculous and the AI may not be really in s60. however, having AI in some application of s60 software will be an encouragement.

Hi, there, Hopfully you'll know what the problem is with my phone's cam. After opening the main camera I have to wait longer than usual (around 10-15 seconds) come all the usual icons, but the screen is all black, nothing shows in it. There's a little sign flashing in the left upper corner. It looks like battery sign with a lightning right next to it. There is no responce after I push the button to take a pic. The battery is fully charged and there must be space left in the card. I never dropped the phone. It just happened without any warning. The front cam still works fine. I switched it off and turned it back on, but that was no help. I'd appreciate your help. Thanks!!!! frankie

How can I put a picture as a wallpaper and get it to ful size in the screen? not only in the center of the screen but in full???Please someone to help me on this.

Mike Macias said...

@ Chris... check out the post I just made for games. Please write the instructions you have for removing themes so i can make a post out of it. thanks bud!

@ Stanley... glad you figured out the problem. for your headphone jack you may have a hardware problem. Call Nokia Care and see what they say.

@ Mekawy... sounds like you won't be able to re-verify the old senders.

@ Chris... give me a link to the game your trying to install.

@ anonymous. don't think it's the AI. Genres are sometimes embedded in the MP3 file information itself.

@ Frankie... that really doesn't sound good. go to the Nokia S60 section of www.howardforums.com and post this problem. the real experts are there and if they can't help you your gonna have to call Nokia Care.

@ anonymous. the only way to do this is manually crop your photos with a photo editing tool on your computer and make them 250x320 pixels. I'll try and write up a tutorial on how to go about this.
