I'm sure many of you already know about Google Maps for S60, an alternative to Nokia Maps. I prefer Google Maps bigtime over Nokia Maps, but I guess it's personal preference.
If you haven't tried Google Maps then maybe you should give it a try. Make sure you have a data plan cuz this application uses all data, which I actually prefer. Nothing is taking up space on your memory card like Nokia Maps.
Google Maps uses GPS and your phones signal to get your location. Upon starting the application your location is found almost instaneously. Once found you have some great options. If your on the freeway, you can check the traffic by pressing 7. You'll see either red, yellow, or green. I'm sure you know what the colors stand for. Zooming in and out is a breeze by pressing the 1 and 3 key. You can scroll around the maps and then push 0 to get back to your current location.
The search feature is where I think Google Maps really excels over Nokia Maps. Since your using the most powerful search engine in the world, your going to get great results. Typing "gas station" gets you all the stations nearest to your location. Pick the one you and you you have tons of options. You can call directly from the application, go to website, get directions to and from the selection, and below that you are presented with the rest of the search results. You also have the option to "save to contacts" which is a huge plus for certain buszinesses or contacts that your always in touch with. A few other features are also worth noting. Sometimes, for some reason, your in a building and your not getting a GPS lock. Google Maps can also find your location buy using your phones signal. It's an approximated location, usually within about 1200 meters. Still handy if your sitting at the DMV and decide your gonna try and find a place to eat. You don't need your exact location, but the general location would be perfect. Satellite views are also available. Of course sometimes I get some oddball results from Google, but overall I get what I'm looking for.
As for directions, you get step by step instructions. You go to the next step by pressing 6 and back by pressing 4. It doesn't update turn by turn. There is no option for voice guidance, but hopefully Google implements these features in the future.
To download Google Maps, go to http://www.google.com/ on your N82 and scroll down to where it says Gmail, Maps, & more. Click the Maps(download) link.
Will you be trying out Google Maps for the N82? If you already have it, whats your opinion vs. Nokia Maps?

No voice guidance, bud it could at least do a visual guide from your GPS position to your destiny.
If WM phones have it, WHY we can't?
Hi Mike,
Thanks for all your hard work on the blog. It's my favourite nseries website and the best there is for all us n82 users.
Google Maps is a fantastic app but make sure you're on an unlimited data plan cos it does guzzle up the bytes, but it's worth it as I agree it's so much better than Nokia Maps 2.0
The search returns are lightning quick and the ability to call direct from the map is an ace feature.
Thanx again, Brian, Scotland
This is great! Now if I could only remove that blasted Nokia Maps 2.0. I like how Google Maps doesnt show you driving forward from the North point of view. It moves with you.
In general, google maps is nice, but: As mentioned above, no voice guidance and difficult to use, because the street names are localized, which means here in Thailand all names are written in Thai. I can read it, but the font is very small and I need my reading glasses :-( - not very good while driving. But anyway, it is a nice addition to Nokia Maps.
I've got Google Maps installed on my N95-3, possibly one of the best apps available for S60 phones, I've used it many times, flawless. Especially helpful when using Google maps to search for a destination, then get GPS to take you right to it!
I do have one question for all Nseries GPS phone users, on Nokia Map, if you have installed some maps on your MicroSDHC card, what is the best way to verify which region you have installed from a previous session? I reconnected my phone to Nokia Map Loader, but it just treats it as if I am connecting for the first time, I was hoping it would recognize my previous selections and show me what I have already added (ie. if I have already added a few states, and I'd like to add more, how do I know which ones I am missing)...?
I would prefer not having to re-do everything from scratch...
Google Maps downloads all maps on the fly, which gets horribly expensive if you're roaming out of your own country.
Nokia Maps lets you preload maps to your memory card so you don't need to spend a fortune on international data roaming charges.
Unfortunately the Nokia Map loader sucks.
Nokia Map Loader alternative: http://nokiamaps.moo.no . Works on any operating system with any browser. No need to install anything, so you can add maps on locked-down computers like at work, in school, internet cafes, or straight from your phones built-in browser.
I like google maps very much because of its in depth detailed information in the satellite map. In my county we have just very few main roads marked in both google and nokia maps which is not enough.
But I think google maps should provide a bookmark feature like in the nokia maps which is very useful.
is it working in malaysia?
ash.
yes its working in malaysia...
its awsomE!! XD
will
is it working in india....????
The only issue is that I have to be online to use it. I rather be able to preload the maps and then without connecting to the network, be able to browse my preloaded maps. Is this actually possible?
i have the same doubt..can we preload the maps and then browse them on my N82???
veramente stupendo, peccato non ci sia la guida vocale
